Journalist demands Colombian be returned to face charges

A prominent Colombian journalist on Friday said he talked to Panama President Ricardo Martinelli about his decision to grant asylum to former Colombian Security Director María del Pilar Hurtado.

"I made a friendly call to the Panamanian president," said journalist Hollman Morris. "I said to him, 'Mr. Martinelli, you're protecting a person who attacked the freedom of the press and the dignity of many people, and is being accused of crimes against humanity."

Morris is only one of a number of prominent Colombians who are demanding that Hurtado be returned to that country to face charges of ordering wiretaps to monitor the conversations of journalists and political opponents of the previous administration. Hurtado was granted asylum by Martinelli in November.

Morris, one of the victims, said Hurtado should be delivered to the Colombian justice system to tell what she knows.
