HAVANA -- A group of U.S. women leaders met with Cuban President Raul Castro's daughter Monday for an exchange on topics including gender, reproductive health and gay rights.

The delegation, which arrived in Havana on Sunday, includes Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile and former U.S. Rep. Jane Harman, a California Democrat who resigned in February and now heads the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

"I believe that Cuba is our immediate neighbor and it is time to liberalize U.S. policy toward Cuba," Harman said.

"It is very exciting to hear about some of the social changes going on in your country," she added, apparently referring to a host of economic reforms initiated by Raul Castro to try to boost Cuba's flagging economy.

This thread started on this topic ...

No need to ingratiate the hijackers. They can get creative w/their own threads on the topic of their interest.

Just sayin'.

Thanks for posting this interesting story.

8. Thanks for the comments, Billy Burnett. It was a big surprise, wasn't it?
I really don't know what to make of it, but if Jane Harman's there, a woman who has been rigidly tied to the Defense Department, and Cuba would know this, clearly, too.

You remember the material did come out, so much later, that John F. Kennedy's administration was holding secret meetings with the Cuban government with people as high up the chain as Che Guevara, who met with Kennedy's aide, William Attwood.

You're so right on this shabby thread-jacking crap. The mission to deteriorate conversations to the point people simply give up sharing information altogether is clownish, and stupid. They don't know about our secret message board, and our frequent conference calls. Oh, well.

14. Nope, you didn't respond to a post which shared no information.
It con had a clear, intelligent meaning.

Your "US bashing" is simply out of place, and absurd.

Don't try a kick at roody. It's a stupid idea, and inappropriate. If you don't grasp her meaning, forget it, don't try to pick a fight over it, and don't try to get in the road and screw things up.

Get a hobby.

10. I think that pointless banter sometimes deserves a counter.
I mean, as if the US needs to be "educated" by a third world country that has a very bad sex tourism problem (Cuba isn't called the Thailand of the Caribbean for nothing). I find sex workers to be extremely exploited people, and cannot envision a scenario where sex work in and of itself is not exploitive.

I do concede that I could've kept my mouth shut of course, but it was just ridiculous.

13. The post you attempted to answer was very direct and meaningful.
It was a pointed comment which we understand, and it was valid. It concerns communication among some DU'ers who are old friends, some going back even years before D.U. The serious ones among us are very accustomed to great conversations, have done it for years, have been sharing events for years, and discussing them together.

We very easily understand what people mean when they choose to waste everyone's time. Don't need, don't care for it, don't respect it.
Sensible people would.

I've never heard Cuba called the "Thailand of the Carribean," but I've heard Cuba called the "Whorehouse of the Caribbean" many times, in reference to its "charms" before the revolution.

Even heard it on an older documentary done by a man from England, when it was shown on tv, I think on PBS. He very directly used that term referring to Cuba during the years before Cuba overthrew the last Cuban US butcher puppet.

17. It was a pointless soundbyte. The fact that you've not hear of Cuba as the "Thailand of the...
...Caribbean" shows you ignorance of the subject, unfortunately. Just a little while ago some Italians were arrested for killing a http://www.lanazione.it/firenze/cronaca/2011/01/11/440798-fiorentino_accusato.shtml">child prostitute (it went unreported here on this forum).

You can go on about how there's prostitution everywhere else and educate me about America's various prostitution problems, but it won't change the fact that Cuba is one hot ass destination. You can, right now, google sex tourism in Cuba and find actual tourist guides that will get it for you.

Indeed, without question, child prostitution, pornography and abuse of children is more of a problem here than in Cuba.
