Peruvian President-elect Humala may pardon Fujimori

Peru's President-elect Ollanta Humala says he would pardon former President Alberto Fujimori on humanitarian grounds if his health worsens.

Mr Humala told Peru's El Comercio newspaper that "nobody should die in prison, except people serving life sentences for abusing children".

Fujimori is serving a 25-year sentence for corruption and ordering killings by the security forces.

1. Not a big fan of this statement

Fujimori was convicted of gross human rights violations and stealing billions of soles. Humala could ensure that he recieved proper care. I don't know why he has to pardon him. Also, instead of this line of argument, why not promise to reform Peru's horrific prison system inclduing ensuring that all prisoners recieve proper healthcare.

2. Humala said the same the day before the runoff

That he would consider pardoning Fuji on humanitarian grounds. (Something is wrong with Fuji's tongue, could be beginning of cancer.)

Anyway, last week Humanla, after he won, said Fujimori was not his No. 1 priority.

Look for Fujimori to be transfered from his fancy prison digs now (1,000 square meters according to Lima media, gym, cable TV, unlimited visiting rights etc) to a more common cell.

Would be befitting.

3. LOL either way he was going to be pardoned.
At least Humanla didn't have Rudy Gialuiani advising him.

4. I wondered what Rudy was doing down there

Lima media said he was advising Keiko on national security matters, whatever those may be in Peru.

Lot of good it did Keiko. But it probably fattened Rudy's wallet some.
