Venezuela congress backs Chavez post-surgery
Today at 07:52 | Associated Press Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's congressional allies on Tuesday voted down an opposition proposal for the leader to temporarily cede his duties as president while he recovers in Cuba after undergoing pelvic surgery.
Pro-Chavez lawmakers hold 98 of the 165 seats in the National Assembly. They dismissed opposition claims that Chavez's absence after the surgery would require him to temporarily delegate his duties to a subordinate.
Opposition lawmaker Omar Barboza argued it would be "unconstitutional" for Chavez to continue leading the government while in Havana.
But lawmaker Cilia Flores said during Tuesday's debate that she and other pro-Chavez lawmakers authorize Chavez to stay in Cuba as long as his doctors consider it necessary.
