Zelaya calls for end to ruling elite in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras—Ex-Honduran President Manuel Zelaya predicts his popular movement will oust the Central American country's ruling elite.

He predicts the liberal-socialism goals of his National Popular Resistance Front will govern Honduras for 50 years and will replace the oligarchy that he says holds the nation "captive."

His comments Sunday at a gathering of 1,600 supporters came in his first major public appearance since returning from exile in May.

Zelaya also is calling for Honduras to hold an assembly to rewrite the constitution. His effort as president to hold a referendum on calling a constitutional assembly led to the military-backed coup that ousted him two years ago.
