A colonel was found guilty Tuesday of crimes against state security for his role in the shock September 30 revolt in which President Rafael Correa was forcibly detained for hours, court sources said.

Colonel Ronaldo Tapia, the former security chief for Ecuador's legislature, and five police were found guilty in a trial that ended early Tuesday in the Pichinchas court in this Andean capital.

The convictions were the first in the foiled attempt to oust elected leftist Correa, an economist by training. The uprising left 10 dead and 274 wounded.

The court was expected to hand down sentences soon, but no date was immediately announced.
