Paraguay leftists urge end to presidential limit

ASUNCION, Paraguay — A coalition of left-leaning political parties and groups in Paraguay has presented a petition to Congress urging lawmakers to amend the constitution so leftist President Fernando Lugo can seek re-election.

The South American nation's constitution limits presidents to a single five-year term.

News media reports in recent days have said a majority of Paraguay's legislators including some of Lugo's allies indicate they oppose lifting the ban on multiple presidential terms that has been in place since 1992.

Lugo has said he would like to run for another term in the 2013 election but will accept the public's view on term limits.
