Malnutrition in Colombia is most prevalent in the countryside, the country's minister of agriculture reportedly said Monday.

Agricultural Minister Juan Camilo Restrepo identified two reasons for which these areas continue to struggle: low income and high unemployment for farmers in rural areas.

Paradoxically, the fields where farmers grow Colombia's food is where there is the most malnutrition and unemployment exist, according to Restrepo.

The minister called for measured to protect farmers from negative effects of a free trade agreement with the U.S.
