Uribe loses big in Colombia's local elections

Adriaan Alsema

Colombia's former President Alvaro Uribe lost a great deal of political influence in Sunday's local elections, where candidates endorsed by him lost in almost all major cities and in the majority of departments.

Uribe, who had been giving "democratic workshops" throughout the country since January and intensified his explicit endorsement of candidates in the months leading up to the elections saw his gubernatorial candidates lose in 10 departments and win in six.

<...>

Uribe's most prominent defeats were in Bogota where his candidate Enrique Peñalosa lost to Uribe's long-time political enemy Gustavo Petro and in his home department of Antioquia, where his allies lost both the Governor's Office and the Mayor's Office of the capital, Medellin.

According to Noticias Uno, a newscast that has been highly critical of Uribe for years, 90% of the candidates supported by Uribe lost in Sunday's elections.

<...>

Nevertheless, according to political analysis website La Silla Vacia, Uribe did win in municipalities that are of economic importance to his family; the former president won almost 90% of the municipalities in the neo-paramilitary violence-ridden Cordoba where he owns a holiday home, "El Uberrimo." Uribe also won the municipalities forming the "half moon" northwest of Bogota where his sons have invested in projects of what could be the biggest free trade zone near the capital. The former president also won in Puerto Gaitan, Meta where Canadian oil company Pacific Rubiales runs Colombia's largest oil field, although these elections are contested because according to electoral observers falsified ballots were found.

1. Interesting that somebody unrec'ed this. My rec got zeroed out.
Could we have a DUer who approves of mafioso politicos (i.e., death, torture, terror to leftists; and society inflicted with death squads, bribery, land theft, high-placed, protected drug lords, drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, jack-booted, highly corrupt police, illegal domestic spying, election fraud and other crimes--typical of Uribe and the rightwing in Colombia)?

Thank you for posting the info that Uribe has suffered such a huge defeat! I appreciate it!

That the Bush Junta's handpicked crime boss for president of Colombia lost so many elections brings joy to my heart. That he is still running around loose, coddled and protected by the Obama administration, appalls me, but then, "we must look forward not backward" on the crimes of the rich and powerful," according to Obama, and, further, I suspect that his "deal" for power involved immunity for Bushwhack principles and, should Uribe ever get what he deserves, as to investigation, prosecution and punishment, Bush Junta crimes in Colombia could come out and/or Uribe, under prosecutorial pressure, could rat on his mentors himself. So, what I suspect is Deal 2 (or "Deal, subparagraph...") to protect anybody who could rat on Junior and his cohorts (esp., re Colombia, Rumsfeld and Amb. Wm. Brownfield.) (Indeed, Obama elevated Brownfield to Western Hemisphere Sec'y or some such title. Uribe's vast, illegal spying operation, DAS--suspected of drawing up "hit lists" of trade unionists and other targets for the death squads--was reporting to Amb. Brownfield. As for Rumsfeld, I think the Pentagon was using Colombia as a training ground for military and military 'contractor' hit men and death squads for use elsewhere in the world.)

Hopefully, this big election defeat will discourage Uribe from trying to gain power again, but I tend to doubt that it will. With our elections fixed (by Diebold/ESS), it is a good bet that we will see Bush Junta II (the current 'Congress' is just a foretaste of what Diebold/ESS can accomplish with their 'TRADE SECRET' voting systems) and that, as a consequence, Uribe will be re-installed in power in Colombia. All he has to do is stay in the game. (I think Panetta ousted him because he was too "hot"--as to prosecution and revelations in Colombia--but landed him on a silk cushion of immunity and 'honors' in obedience to the Bush Cartel. Panetta was a member of Bush Sr's "Iraq Study Group"--that "old CIA" group that I believe ousted Rumsfeld and curtailed Cheney, mostly over nuking Iran--and then permitted Obama to be elected, to get some P.R. breathing space on the Bush Junta's massive and horrendous crimes.)

In summary, and in all justice, Uribe shouldn't have had any part in these elections in Colombia. That some of his endorsees 'won' means hell on earth for the poor and their advocates in those areas of Colombia--and, of course, a boost for big time crime and for U.S. "free trade for the rich" (which amount to the same thing, pretty much).

Anybody with the wherewithal to investigate this matter might peruse USAID funding in Colombia which inevitably all goes to rightwing causes and candidates in LatAm. Uribe is off the charts rightwing into fascism, nazism, murder and mayhem, so it would interesting to know if any of our tax money went there (to his selected candidates). There are many billions of U.S. tax dollars floating around Colombia--to the military and their death squads, to corrupt 'aid' programs, to bought and paid for 'journalists,' to phony 'democracy' groups and generally to the worse elements in society--through various agencies here, including the Pentagon, the CIA, the USAID, U.S. "war on drugs" agencies, U.S. "anti-terrorism" agencies and others. It is a spider's web of dirty money--all stolen from us and put to bad use--but USAID funds seem the easiest to track.
