Workers at state-owned steel company Siderúrgica del Orinoco Alfredo Maneiro (Sidor) staged protests for 33 hours and partially blocked access to the city of Puerto Ordaz, south Venezuela.
The outsourced workers, who requested to be hired as permanent staff, met with a Committee of the Vice-President's Office and the Ministry of Basic Industries and Mining (Mibam) and with representatives of Sidor's departments of Finance and Human Resources.
President Hugo Chávez has promised to put an end to outsourcing in the Venezuelan steelmaker, but financial burdens have prevented the government from meeting the schedule of hiring of permanent staff.
