...GLBTQ Online High School puts the choice in the hands of the families - not the community and not the bureaucracy of a public school system. When we're up and running next fall, kids won't need to wait for years for safe schools while their communities debate the issues.

We strongly support the efforts of GLSEN, Safe Schools Coalition and others who work hard to make "regular" schools more accepting places for GLBT youth. We believe that such work doesn't compete with our approach, but complements it.

We look forward to the day when our school can close its virtual doors because all schools, urban, suburban and rural, understand the needs of GLBT kids and thoroughly support them during the often difficult time of adolescence.

Until that time, GLBTQ Online High School will exist to provide that safe, affirming place for kids everywhere looking for a high quality education in a safe community. No student deserves anything less.

The GLBTQ Online High School will provide a safe and welcoming educational community that provides a high quality, comprehensive college-preparatory online high school experience for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or questioning their sexual orientation or gender using the best technology and techniques of distance education.

Vision

* The school will provide a safe, high quality, alternative to traditional high schools.
* The school will enhance its educational program with community outreach, parent support, social opportunities and a variety of online clubs and interest groups.
* The school will be global in reach with an American-style college preparatory curriculum.
* The school will utilize new and ever-changing technologies to enhance and improve the learning and support experience for all students.
* The school will address a wide range of student needs through a variety of support services and social opportunities.
* The school will provide a variety of scholarship opportunities.
* The private, tuition-based school is a non-profit organization that supports and works with many other organizations in the GLBTQ community.

1. I am torn on this

It sounds like a great idea


It is beyond sad that it is needed


And is it for profit? What are your feelings about this Duncan? I think I need a little bit more info about who is running this and how it is being marketed. Also, would it be receiving state funds (I am from Ohio and any certified online school gets some funding)...or is it more like a home school helper?

BTW, how WOULD you market this?

On a final note - if I were pf the age that I had school age children again, I would home school. The junior high/high school scene around here is completely toxic now (and this is in the heart of the central Ohio suburbs)

3. I work with a GSA at my school

and would hate to see any of my students feel the need to go this route but I would be very supportive of them if they felt the need to go this route. I remember vividly what middle school and early high school were like for me and I would have taken this route in a new york minute.
