Helping Obama with Helpful Character Attacks!
A funny bit of satire from DK's Recommended Diaries

....
When the left insists that Barack Obama is corrupt and has been purchased by wealthy corporations or wealthy individuals, that ***HELPS*** him! After all - swing voters and the media love to rally behind people who have tainted morals!

When the left insists that Barack Obama is a liar or is generally dishonest and loose with the facts, they're ***HELPING*** him! After all - being a liar is popular with swing voters and the media (OK, this one might be true)!

When the left insists that Barack Obama makes national security decisions for political reasons, they're ***HELPING*** him! After all - being callous with our troops and treating them like political playthings really appeals to swing voters!

........

So why isn't Obama thanking you for your tireless work to boost his cause? Probably because he's pretty busy right dealing with the worst set of crises since WW2. I'm going to just jump in here and thank you for him! Thank God for your heroic and principled attacks on his character and intentions using right-wing memes! Keep them up!

PS: Policy-based attacks on Obama from the Left that presume that he's acting in good faith but making the wrong strategic decisions would be useless and ARE TO BE AVOIDED!!! Let's stay away from substance. We're better off lobbing frothy mouthed invective at him. After all - if voters see that Obama's base is a bunch of intemperate nutcases, then this will help the progressive cause!!!

3. he's a savvy centrist politician
that's not a character issue. Any "lies" of his are the routine kind of lie we see from all politicians. In fact Obama was very open about his centrist beliefs. Some of his supporters who see centrism as being synonymous with evil couldn't accept that about him and so went into denial.

9. He is a pragmatic progressive
For example his work as a community organizer shows his desire to help the poor and those in need

his work as a civil rights attorney shows his care for this important issue

His general effort to help others, bridge gaps, engage in critical thinking and make sure everyone gets a fair break is the true hallmark of a liberal or progressive.

10. sure he cares
and he thinks centrist policies and politics are the way to do those good things. Bill Clinton did too. Both damn fine presidents (for centrists).

It makes no sense at all.

But it's easy to tell the difference.

8. Do you think it's helpful to Obama to attack the left on his behalf?
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 03:39 PM by Smashcut
Because there's plenty of that going on as well. And I don't mean just to people shouting "Obama is a liar" - I mean people with substantive, legitimate criticisms who are being called names or told they're helping Republicans by raising said objections.

You may want swing voters' votes - but swing voters are generally wishy-washy types that can't be bothered to inform themselves until election day. That's why they're swing voters in the first place! A lot of the people on "the left" that you deride (and that others on this thread and many others have derided) are the people who took time off of work to get this man elected. If their feelings of disappointment or disagreement are expressed in an emotional way, it's the same passion they put to use working for Obama reexpressed in a different way. Telling them they and their concerns are irrelevant (such as by ha-haing at polls showing an increase in Obama's approval despite their complaints) or telling them they're helping the enemy is not to Obama's benefit.

11. Sigh. You make good points but no one will listen.
Of course, rhe fact remains that Obama ]did "twist the truth" unhelpfully with the "I never campaigned" remark.

That was not a useful or particularly truthful statement, and it certainly fanned the flames among those who already felt let down by his performance in the HCR effort.

The main thing now is to continue the fight for true reform, with or without the president's support.

18. If you likie the DLC it's a great column -- I don't and think it's childish tripe
"Mark Warner is God." Mark Warner is a classic conservative "centrist."

And I never trust anyone wh refers to a public figure as "God." I love Bernie Sanders but I would never refer to him as "God.'

The column is not written very well either. The logic of satire goes in different directions at once.

20. When Obama calls the left "the fringe" is that helpful to the Democratic party?
When Obama called single payer "radical" is that helpful to the discussion on health care insurance reform and putting in perspective the health wants and needs of most Americans?

So how does Obama's language and behavior help the progressive cause?

23. Bad me.
The fringe left are those folks that support single payer, and don't support bank bailouts for the megawealthy banksters.

Yes they are bad, and I am one of them, and we are here at DU. Deal with it.
