Based on how incredibly irresponsible and partisan the GOP has been in the media with the Christmas Underpants Bomber, I can only imagine how they will act and spin paranoia if another attack happens.
It could be 9/11 Fear/Paranoia/Xenophobia on steroids, based on how people like Cheney, Rove, King, Lieberman and others have piped in with what can only be obviously careless talking points and purile Monday Morning Quarterback chatter.
How the interviews that US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made initially were turned into vapid screeds about how the "system is broken" surely showed to me what I suspected they would do when I first saw the interviews. It was more than obvious that Napolitano was making the point that, as people like Rove/Bush/Cheney/Ashcroft/Card stated after Richard Reid tried to use a PETN-laced shoe bomb, we can't stop everyone but can be vigilant on many security fronts.
It's as though you can envision what a bratty teenager would say if you slipped on the ice. They would yell and laugh that you slipped and scream at the top of their lungs looking for attention to point out that you slipped. That's the GOP in a nutshell.
It took George Bush 6 days to respond to the Richard Reid shoe bomb attempt. It took Obama administration officials like Napolitano less than 24 hours, even though anyone who understands such events knows it takes time to get all the facts in. It took Obama about 72 hours to make an official statement.
Granted, the GOP has been running away from all the votes they made for Bush's careless policies and wars and think no one has video recordings of them or records of their antics. They assume all of us are as stupid as their base.
So what will happen if we have another terrorist strike happen again on US soil? You can fully expect panic, fear, jingoism, racism, paranoia and other pointless (but apparently politically profitable) antics that will make McCarthyism look like a kindergarten picnic.
Unfortunately, the mainstream media eats Fear for breakfast, Paranoia for lunch and Desperation for dinner.
