For full and part time jobs.

That is a very good sign, since it is past the holidays. There is an op on the drop in unemployment numbers dropping again.

This really is starting to turn around. I know the Midwest is ahead of the curve on this, but I think we are going to see a much better 2010 employment wise.

I heard yesterday manufacturing is expected to increase hires by 23% next year.. that's right.. manufacturing..

So expect the republicans and their little toadies to bash democrats and Obama to the moon. That was their one hope.. that the economy would so break apart they would just flood the house in 2010..

Oh I know they will pick up some seats.. geez, we have taken the last two elections, and common sense and history tells us that.

But I do not think they are going to get a majority in the house.

Just a little good New Years News from Iowa..

Edit to add story on consumer confidence..

Consumer Confidence Hits 3 Month High
Reuters Staff, 12.29.09, 10:19 AM EST
Home prices remained unchanged, holding onto five months of gains.

NEW YORK (Reuters)--Wall Street rose at the open on Tuesday after data showed U.S. home prices were unchanged in October, ending five straight months of increases but suggesting a slow stabilization in the sector.

NEW YORK (Reuters)--U.S. consumer confidence improved more than expected in December, hitting a three-month high as job market pessimism eased and consumers' expectations reached a two-year high, according to a private report released on Tuesday. The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes rose to 52.9 in December from a revised 50.6 in November.

1. We're going to need every new job we can get
Especially in manufacturing durable goods. That will help us greatly during the mid-terms.

6. Might be "anecdotal"
but I'm seeing the same thing here.

Given, it seems to be all retail and service jobs, but I am seeing the signs up. It's better than nothing and hopefully will lead to more manufacturing jobs as mentioned above.

7. Noticed the same thing at the grocery store and several restaurants.
The UPS store too.

I haven't seen any "now hiring" signs for years.

10. I had no appreciable slow-down in freelance work in December, and have already
gotten several calls from current clients and possible new clients asking my availability in January. I'm taking that as a good sign. Fingers crossed.

12. Thanks Peacetrain!
I was really surprised about December because I was on vacation for 10 days at the beginning of the month and with the holidays at the end of the month I planned on zero income. Instead I've made just below my average. And I have a feeling that, come Monday, everyone is going to be back in their offices and ready to work. Yee-haw!

14. That is Good News
and I do think the economy is starting to rebound.

You may live in a favored area, however. Des Moines is #1 on Market Watch's Best Cities for Business in 2009:
Des Moines' strongest performance was in the unemployment metric, where it had the third-best ranking of all 101 cities. Its jobless rate was 6% in September -- one of three unemployment data points used -- far below the national average of 9.8% for that month.
It seems to be a regional phenomenon, too -- Omaha is #3.

16. Exactly how many stores did you count? What type of stores were they? Is 70% a rounded off number?
Or are you just making shit up? I think you're just making shit up. If not, I think you just walked past a bunch of stores that hadn't taken down their "Now Hiring" signs yet. I've been to five or six BIG malls in CA within the last two weeks, and saw NOTHING like what you're saying.

I call bullshit. Bullshit for making up a number and putting it out there as if it were significant of anything at all.

18. By the way.. I am not saying the recession is over .. Just that hey people
are starting to get some jobs here.. maybe they are not the kind you get in California.. but last year, the hiring post holidays went negative..and stores were closing..

It is looking a lot better than the abyss we were looking over this time last year.. It was terrifying.. so excuse me all to HELL that I see some light at the end of the freaking tunnel

24. Saw much the same thing in several stores including 2 grocery chains
Fred Meyer had a sign up that they were hiring full and part-time clerks and warehouse help. The signs were printed with a December 28th date and said that applications would be accepted Jan 4-15, 2010. Safeway is advertising for warehouse help and drivers.

JC Penneys store had a sign up saying they would be accepting new applications Jan 11-15.

25. Retail hiring isn't ideal, since it doesn't pay a living wage.
But it's at least some good news.

I'm cautiously optimistic for jobs. I think the unemployment has peaked, and we'll see it drop by a point by the end of summer, maybe more.

28. Saw a Help Wanted sign at a Barnes & Noble store today.
The sign advertised full-time work with health benefits. Retail isn't the best kind of employment, but I'm glad to see some hiring of any kind.
