4. Where do you get he's rising in the polls?
I follow pollster.com when I wanna check the polls. The info is usually a point and click away there.

Here's where I see the two generic, catch-everything polls on Obama:

This thread was here with no source or attribution. Just a "he's up in the polls." Yeah, I asked same thing: based on what? So if he comes out with a way to get us back to work, no problem. People are getting pissed their out of work and preceive he is dragging his feet on this. Confidence is low on jobs issue unless he can pull a wabbit out of the hat and regain some confidence of the voters.

Folks will lend an ear alright, but increasingly- both in the states and abroad, people will wonder when gig will be up.

2010 will be a very interesting year for the administration in that respect.

77. Why would anyone be disappointed?

The only thing that ought to disappoint folks is ineffective public policy- and the perception among various constituencies that it's not worth standing up and fighting for.

People who believe their interests aren't worth a politician's effort- won't make enthusiastic efforts on behalf of that politician.

Pretty straightforward dynamic- and one that we've seen time and time again.

If Obama and the Dems actually want to win 2010 (as opposed to cut losses- or get royally thumped, there's still some (fleeting after HCR) hope.

Here's how it would look:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=6918&mesg_id=6918

Simply "not being Republicans" isn't going to do the trick.

81. Hi, depakid. I sense that some here are not interested
in success for this President, despite their "not being Republicans."

Politics is always that way.

It's that way in Los Angeles, in Chicago, in New York. Some things are greenlighted and succeed; others are not. Alliances are forged and alliances are abandoned.

There's plenty of sentiment against the President on this site. I don't think you'd deny that. Some of it is acute. I don't think you'd deny that either.

Pushing for meaningful reform is dirty business. I would clean it up myself if I thought I could or knew how, but I can't and don't. Do I yearn for more Wellstones and Boxers in the Senate? Yes. Do I have a magic formula for electing Wellstones and Boxers in Mississippi and South Carolina? No.

When I DO have that formula, I will pass it along to Tim Kaine.

In the meanwhile, if the world is not exactly as I would prefer it to be, I'm in the fight against people like Jim Inhofe and John Cornyn whose world vision is wildly opposed to mine. We act in our own neighborhood here and in our own city and are well engaged in the county party work in supporting Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. More specific urban policy issues catch our eye, but we aren't insensitive to the local farmers' issues which are gathering steam and constituencies.

We -- and the people we are working with to get these things done -- are not despairing of this President and in very significant majority percentage plan to re-elect him if he chooses to run. We expect the normal fluctuation of seats downward in the first off-year election but not by national mandate. We like our side on the issues, in particular.

I continue to enjoy your posts on this site.

87. Why would you think that?
Do you view a president to be successful if he is popular, or if he serves the people's best interests? It's hard to vote honestly in a poll when the meaning of the question is not clear.

The people gave the job of president to Obama. I was thrilled, so were millions of other Americans. That had nothing to do with the person, but with what he had represented himself to be capable of doing for this country. Since I don't know him personally, that's the only thing I have to go on. How he tackles the issues, who he surrounds himself with to help him do so, and the results of his actions.

Obama seems like a nice guy, but that's not why I supported him. Is that why you did? If so, it would explain why you are not disappointed in some of his actions so far.

I'm asking because there are people who invest themselves so emotionally in politicians that they find it hard to acknowledge when they are not doing a very good job. That's very bad for the country.

In reality, the exact opposite of what you wrote is true, even more so for those who are disappointed so far. They are the people who more than anything else, want him to succeed. Because his success would mean theirs and success for the American people.

So, I am voting 'yes, I want him to succeed'. Because if he fails, the American people lose. The presidency isn't American Idol after all.

Bush was extremely popular in polls for a long time. That did not translate into success for the American people. Reagan was very popular in polls also. But he too was not a success as far as the job he was hired to do (except in the fevered, ignorant minds of the hopelessly indoctrinated).

I just wanted to be clear on what 'success' means, to me at least. Your OP was anything but clear.

89. If there is "sentiment against the president" per se
then I'd put that into the same category as blind sycophantry that focuses on personality- politicians- or party- over respobsibly public policy.

What I tend to see much more often is pattern of taking key constituencies for granted- or turning on them when push comes to shove.

Or- at times, gratuitously scolding them- or dissuading them from action (as we saw repeatedly during the health care debate). That's not a formula for successful policy making or sustainable coalition building- though it IS -and has been quite effective in moving many aspects of the corporate right agenda forward- to the detriment of the vast majority of ordinary Americans- and the nation as a whole.

Moreover, as we saw during the Clinton administration- there are times when Democrats are uniquely capable of doing so- accomplishing parts of the right wing agenda that Republicans (as effective as they are) would likely fail at.

When the administration goes that route- progressive groups and their supporters (who btw, have gotten it right over the past 15 years) are going to oppose them- or at the very least become demoralized and say: Ok, that's how it is- find some other boots to put on the ground from the ranks of your new allies.

A reasonable response- to be expected based on human nature.

To paraphrase Dean a couple of weeks ago: we didn't elect Democrats to propose and enact crap policy.

And- to paraphrase Dean several years ago: those guys driving around with confederate flags on their trucks- they need decent jobs, health care and good education systems for their families, too. Frame that correctly- create the narrative- or better yet, deliver that (or put up a solid fight) and many will get on board- just as they did in their Dixiecrat past.

In this regard, consider these instructive anecdote(s) from 2008 (actually poignant in their crudeness)

Last week, Julie Hensley made one of her thousands of phone calls on behalf of Barack Obama. A woman answered. As Hensley ran through her short script, the husband impatiently broke in.

"Ma'am, we're voting for the n***er." And hung up.

Hensley wasn't having it. "I went and made a couple other calls but chafed over this absurdity," she told us, "so I called them back, as I still had a couple questions for the wife." This time the man answered, asked pointedly who she was, and when she replied he hung up again.

We continue to hear stories like these in Appalachia.

Play Republican lite on the other hand- become identified with health insurers, PhARMA, Wall Street similarly "popular" entities- or give in so often that the perception is that you stand for nothing- the the same old same old. and like 1994 and 2000, you will lose.

As will the nation at large.

82. How do you define 'successful' for a Democratic president?
By image or by policies that benefit the people? Or by polls?

We were phone polled about two weeks ago, and responded 'yes' to 'do you support the president'. Because we do support him. That doesn't mean we are happy at all with his policies so far. To say 'no' since you only get to say 'yes' or 'no', would mean not supporting a Democrat in the WH. I do support a Democrat in the WH. That is different than asking if I support what the Democrat in the WH is doing. Democrats right now are not going to put the president down to pollsters. But in another year or so if things continue as they are, if people start to believe that this administration is aligned so much with Big Business to the detriment of ordinary Americans, they might not be so willing to say 'yes' anymore.

It is the Independent vote that shows the WH needs to start worrying about appearing to not care too much for those who elected them. Independents don't feel the need to worry what anyone thinks of Democrats. And those numbers are going down.

Most people I know want desperately for him to start doing something that those who elected him can be happy about, because the alternative is a return to Republican rule. Even if every Democrat voted for him, despite being disappointed, it would not help him win if he loses the Independent vote and that is what is beginning to happen now.

95. President Obama is African-Anglican-American
to be precise.
The African comes first because African genes are dominant.
That's why he looks -and is- more black than white.
His tightly-curled, wiry hair, brown skin, full lips and broad nose all scream BLACK!
He does have his white mother's slightly large eyes and his white grandfather's prominent ears.
But, he's a BLACK man!!

I think many people on this site actually think the POTUS has more pull than what he does. He (or she -- one day) doesn't really run the Country; he can only influence the way the dominoes fall.

Here's an example. There's been a lot of criticism on this site recently regarding Bill Clinton being responsible for NAFTA. If memory serves me correctly, Bill Clinton had a Republican legislature that was going to pass NAFTA with or without him. Being the astute politician he was (and is), Bill Clinton decided that legislation was going through one way or another, so he decided to intercept the ball and run with it and take credit for a win! That is the type of decision he made from time to time that really pissed the Republicans off.

Every person who enters the White House makes rookie mistakes the first year. I think Bill Clinton started after about three months with Don't Ask Don't Tell (a trap the Republicans set for him that promptly fell right into). It was also Bill Clinton (I believe) who said there is no job that gives one the experience to be POTUS (which is why we have the rookie missteps).

But one thing about Obama which precludes me from getting too upset with him over things with which we disagree is this: during the campaign he said more than once, "You will not always agree with everything I do." Was anyone listening? He also said he wanted to be POTUS of ALL America, not just the blue states, but the red states and the purple states as well. In that latter regard, he must compromise some of those issues which we liberals prefer he not. But ... he did warn us! Was no one listening?

Whenever I have gotten upset during the health care debacle, I stop and ask myself who would I rather see sitting in the Oval Office and the answer comes immediately: no one else.

I do not know why we have been so tough on Barack Obama -- he's just getting started.

Sam

22. It is telling
that you are trying to enforce a DU rule on me but not the OPer.

Content: Do not post messages that are inflammatory, extreme, divisive, incoherent, or otherwise inappropriate. Do not engage in anti-social, disruptive, or trolling behavior. Do not post broad-brush, bigoted statements. The moderators and administrators work very hard to enforce some minimal standards regarding what content is appropriate. But please remember that this is a large and diverse community that includes a broad range of opinion. People who are easily offended, or who are not accustomed to having their opinions (including deeply personal convictions) challenged may not feel entirely comfortable here. A thick skin is necessary to participate on this or any other discussion forum.

If you have any questions I am more than happy to post multiple examples.

25. What is telling is that you are plainly breaking a rule
while the OP plainly isn't; and yet you feel hard done by. Perhaps you have some greivance about some other post the thread starter made; but a thick skin ought to cure you of that. Here's more of the rules for you: 'Do not "stalk" another member from one discussion thread to another. Do not follow someone into another thread to try to continue a disagreement you had elsewhere.'

And lest you feel like posting those 'multiple examples' of what has upset you:

"You are permitted to post polite behavioral corrections to other members of the message board, in direct response to specific instances of incivility, provided that your comments are narrowly focused on the behavior. But you are not permitted to make broad statements about another person's behavior in general, and you are not permitted to post repeated reminders about another person's mistakes."

If you really, really think the thread starter is breaking DU rules elsewhere, then I'm sure you know the thing to do is to alert on those particular posts, not moan when he starts a mainstream DU thread like this one.

46. That's the good thing about UnRec, it limited the insipid K&R threads that say little.
Like, "K&R if you like Obama" or "K&R if you like Michelle Obama". Real deep OPs like that which in reality are just whoring for Recs.

44. He's never slipped in my view. Incidentally, do you know who is polled?
Only people with land lines of which most are getting rid of. When polling through snail mail the only people that actually answer are the elderly whites that have time on their hands. They don't poll progressive leaning young people who only use cell phones or minorities. And if you noticed on television, the people that vote are an example of the type of people that watch the crap that's shown on 90% of the channels. How do you think bigot Reagan got "Best President Ever"? What a farce was that? Even his own son said, "Well, I don't know about that? Polls are a joke. I'm counting on the silent majority to back Obama as they did on November 4th, 2008. They came out in the millions. I thank the Lord that Obama is our President and not some other greedy, bought, right wing nutjob that would have caused the total collapse of this country. And I pray they will NEVER gain the majority in any capacity again in my lifetime or any other person's. That is the main reason we have to get rid of electronic voting machines. To make damn sure they stole their last election.

Even if we assume that Gallup did not poll young land-line respondents, how do you explain that 68% of the same kind of sample supported Obama and now it's 51%? That contradicts your claim that he hasn't slipped.

... and in the meantime real reported unemployment stands at over 17% ...

Conservative Republicans from some of the poorest corners of the nation cheered on Bush against the "librul menace" while their Medicare benefits were funneled away, while their effective income dwindled and their jobs were exported to cheaper labor overseas.

It seems some things never change.

97. I'm shocked, disappointed and disilluioned with what Obama/Dems have done with health care . ..
Edited on Sat Jan-02-10 09:33 PM by defendandprotect
but, naturally happy that Obama is rising in the polls . . .

if, indeed, that is true --

Rather it looks like his "favorables" have been dropping ---

and his "unfavorables" have been rising --

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=107115&mesg_id=107128

Certainly no one is dancing in the streets over the health care fiasco!!

We didn't elect Dems in '06 --

Nor Obama in '08 for their ability to poll well --

We elected Dems in '06 to end the war --

We elected Obama in '08 to pass universal health care -- as every other nation has --

and NOT to give us MORE INSURANCE COMPANIES, MORE 'FOR PROFIT' HEALTH CARE

CORPORATIONS AND MORE GREEDY PHARMA AT COSTS OF HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS

AND TRILLIONS TO TAXPAYERS --!!
