Obama effigy hanged in Jimmy Carter's home town
The US Secret Service says it is investigating after an effigy of Barack Obama was found hanging in the home town of former President Jimmy Carter.

TV footage showed the doll hanging by a noose in front of a red, white and blue sign that reads "Plains, Georgia. Home of Jimmy Carter, our 39th President".

Witnesses said the effigy had President Obama's name on it.

4. Oooh soo original.
All 3 of his/her brain cells worked hard to come up with that stunt.

I wish the article at least showed a photo, so we could see whether it was a good likeness of Obama.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told The Associated Press that the large black doll was found Saturday morning along Main Street in the small town of Plains.

According to footage from WALB-TV, the doll was hanging by a noose in front of a red, white and blue sign that says "Plains, Georgia. Home of Jimmy Carter, our 39th President." A witness told the television station that the doll wore a sign with Obama's name on it.

has any of this made it on the national corporate tv news yet?
seems kind of important.

8. Welcome to MississippiAlabamaGeorgia.
A friend of mine has an antique map hanging in his bathroom. It's from the era that the three states were collectively known as Georgia.

Nothing has changed here since then.

Nothing.

22. As a former Mississippian, I have to agree with you. Of course
it's usually not *quite* so blatant as this. And even my VERY RW wacko relatives there would cringe at something so public. BUT I think they mostly just don't want it to be obvious. They prefer their bigotry to be behind closed doors and and in their closed minds.

They like to pretend it's gotten SO much better. But I know differently. At family gatherings the topic of discussion is invariably "the blacks" this and "the blacks" that. And none of what they say about "the blacks" is good. Absolutely nothing.

I left one such gathering in tears of horror and embarrassment. Horror that MY family, a well educated, upper middle class group of people, could believe and SAY such things. And embarrassment that my husband, a New Yorker, was subjected to that kind of bigoted discussion and that he finally saw for himself what the "good" Republican people of Mississippi were really like.

14. remember Carter said the attacks on Obama have a lot to do with race
good for Carter for being one of the few to speak out even when many on our side want to claim it's just about difference of opinion on issues.

20. I don't think
there's a whole lot they can be charged with, other than some misdemeanors.
Still, that would be enough to let everyone know who put it there so they could respond appropriately.
I suspect that thought scares them more than anything else.
