PROVIDENCE –– With the official announcement of his independent candidacy for governor only days away, former U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee has once again dipped into his personal fortune to feed his campaign.
In the closing days of the quarter that ended Thursday, Chafee loaned his campaign $200,000 on top of $110,000 in earlier personal loans to the “exploratory campaign” he launched last April.
His new campaign manager, John “J.R.” Pagliarini, said Chafee’s campaign treasurer is still compiling the numbers, but it appears that he has “$375,000 to $400,000” left in his campaign account, after raising a total of $241,521 that includes the recent $200,000 personal loan.
By putting this much of his own money into his campaign, Pagliarini said, Chafee hoped to demonstrate that he is “seriously committed” to the race, even though his fundraising still trails, by a wide margin, two high-profile incumbents also running for governor. Campaign reports for the quarter that ended Thursday are not due into the state Board of Elections until the end of January.
