DOD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Jan. 3 in Ashoque, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with multiple improvised explosives devices and small arms fire. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.

Killed were:

Sgt. Joshua A. Lengstorf, 24, of Yoncalla, Ore.

Spc. Brian R. Bowman, 24, of Crawfordsville, Ind.

Pvt. John P. Dion, 19, of Shattuck, Okla.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of an airman who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Senior Airman Bradley R. Smith, 24, of Troy, Ill., died Jan. 3 near Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 10th Air Support Operations Squadron, Fort Riley, Kan.

The News-Review newspaper of Roseburg reports that Lengstorf graduated from Elkton High School in 2004 and leaves behind a wife and 14-month-old daughter.

Spc. Bowman joined the Army in Aug. 2006 and served in Afghanistan from May 2009 until Jan. 3, 2010.

While in service, Spc. Bowman earned the Army Good Conduct Medal; the National Defense Service Medal; the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Army Service Ribbon; the NATO Medal and the Combat Medic Badge.

Pvt. Dion joined the Army in June 2009 and served in Afghanistan from Nov. 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010.

While in service, Pvt. Dion earned the National Defense Service Medal; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Cpl. Lengstorf joined the Army in Aug. 2006 and served in Iraq from March 2007 to Dec. 2007 and in Afghanistan from May 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010.

While in service, Cpl. Lengstorf earned the Army Commendation Medal; the Army Achievement Medal; the National Defense Service Medal; the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; the Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Army Service Ribbon; the Overseas Service Ribbon; the NATO Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Waveland soldier killed in Afghanistan

Afghanistan - An Indiana soldier was killed in action in Afghanistan over the weekend.

Pfc. Brian Bowman was killed along with three other American servicemen by an improvised explosive device. Bowman, a Waveland native, was 24 years old and was serving in the U.S. Army as a medic.

Bowman's wife Casie is flying to Dover, Maryland, to receive his remains.

The 2004 graduate of Southmount High School is described as a good athlete who chose to play in the band instead. Band director Brian Bartlett remembered him fondly.

"The best thing I could tell you about Brian was Brian as student, number one, really enjoyed excelling. He was somebody that knew how to get the job done, do it well, prided himself on doing it well," said Bartlett.

"Brian had a great sense of humor. Matter of fact, there's a picture in my office - in 2001 they had dress as a teacher day. I'm pretty famous for wearing a black tie, white shirt and suspenders and he's one of the kids who dressed like that. The picture is up in my office still today," Bartlett added. "Just a wonderful kid to work with. He was a great band member. Just a good kid to work with every day."
