WASHINGTON DC, United States - A top US military commander responsible for the Middle East and the Gulf region said the United States has developed contingency plans to deal with Iran's nuclear facilities, insisting that they "can be bombed."

"Well, they certainly can be bombed," General David Petraeus, head of US Central Command, told CNN television as he commented on suggestions that Iranian nuclear facilities were heavily fortified.

"The level of effect would vary with who it is that carries it out, what ordnance they have, and what capability they can bring to bear," he added.

The network plans to air the interview later Sunday, but has released some excerpts.

Petraeus did not elaborate on the plans, but he said the military has considered the impacts of any action taken there, CNN said.

"It would be almost literally irresponsible if Centcom were not to have been thinking about the various 'what ifs' and to make plans for a whole variety of different contingencies," Petraeus said

they LOVE war because they get big bucks like COMBAT pay which for a General is a nice piece of change. A four star General is payed almost 10,000.00 a month

combat pay is the same for all ranks. In 2009 that was $225.00 per month. If in a combat zone for at least one day. The big reward is pay is tax free in a combat zone.

9. So, this is all about "what ifs"?

We have contingency plans to invade, bomb, attack just about every country and/or respond to attacks on us. That doesn't mean that military action is imminent and I can't think of any particular reason that President Obama would be seriously contemplating military action. President Obama (not that he seems to be trusted much here anymore but still....) has not announced any plans to attack Yemen or Somalia and I haven't heard him make any noises about Iran either. So, what exactly is everybody flipping out about?

Anything can, indeed, be bombed. Petraeus then notes that whether or not the bombing is effective depends on multiple factors. That is also true.

Blowing shit up is his job. It is the job of anyone in the military: to blow shit up and not get blown up yourself, if possible.

That he should think in these terms is unsurprising.
