The two sides of the progressive movement (A fun political Science exercise)

The divide that was opened up during the recent policy choices of the Democratic Party has occurred because of the naturally bifurcated nature of the progressive movement

Speaking in Generalities

Those that seem to have the most problem with policies Obama and the Democrats have introduced, and not don't really have a problem with the person himself are. White Upper Class/Middle Class with at least an MA, Regionally fall into the Midwest New England area, suburban. Union, and Gay

Those who see the attacks as more personal against Obama are generally: Lower Class/Working Class have a Bachelors or less, relate culturally with one of the various minority groups, tend to be either Urban or Rural, Southern and Western, etc

So If you support Obama and his policies- Please indicate where you are in these metrics and obviously visa versa if you do not

I'll Start out

I'm Union, Gay, from the Midwest and have a Masters Degree, however I live in the Rural bit of Illinois, and I consider myself firmly against several of the policies the Administration is pursuing

1. for me:

I'm white, male, disabled, employed part-time, from the rural Mid-West, have a working class background, have some college experience but no degree, and am disappointed in Obama's turn towards DLCish policies, though I support his foreign policy with reservations.

I don't particularly care for continuing the war in Afghanistan and I wish the health care bill were better. But I support Obama because I believe in a country as right wing as this one, this is the best we are going to get for the time being.

3. I'm from one of the reddest of the red states,

have had a year and a little bit more of college, female, 58 years old, disabled, and I am in complete agreement with Hippo_Tron's position.

I don't particularly care for continuing the war in Afghanistan and I wish the health care bill were better. But I support Obama because I believe in a country as right wing as this one, this is the best we are going to get for the time being.

I wish Obama would have withdrawn from Afghanistan instead of going for a repeat of Vietnam.

I wish the health care bill that's going to land on his desk would have been Medicare For All.

But if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

This is the best we can do right now.

4. Straight, white, female, Master's degree, retired, live in CT (duh).

Husband was unionized (until laid off).

I am never satisfied, I'll admit it. I wanted a lot more out of HCR and I wanted Obama to have done a helluva lot more by now on gay rights. I had major issues with Clinton, too, with DOMA/DADT and his inaction on Rwanda being at the top of the list.

I now consider myself a democratic Socialist.

White, straight, suburban, graduate degree, middle class and I think Obama's doing as well as possible and just don't expect everything.
