Martha Coakley lead solid in Democratic poll
Martha Coakley enjoys a solid, double-digit lead in the Massachusetts Senate special election, according to an internal Democratic poll obtained by POLITICO.

The survey, conducted by longtime Democratic pollster Mark Mellman, has Democrat Coakley, the state attorney general, leading state Republican Sen. Scott Brown 50 percent to 36 percent.

Mellman’s survey has a similar margin to a Boston Globe poll, released Sunday, which had Coakley up by 15 percent. But this new poll has the attorney general enjoying a wider lead than in some other internal Democratic data.

Still, by commissioning and then disclosing private polling showing Coakley with a significant lead, Democrats are attempting to send the message that they are both taking the race seriously and that the party’s 60-seat majority in the Senate is not threatened. With some public surveys showing a close race over the last week, Democrats in Boston and Washington have grown increasingly nervous about the January 19th election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.

While no professional Democrat believes — or at least will admit — that Coakley could actually lose, the public polls showing a competitive contest have amounted to a wake-up call, alerting senior officials to a race few had been paying attention to because of the state’s overwhelmingly liberal tilt.

5. Nothing is worse than being over-confident immediately before Election Day. Coakley can win, but
it's not a done deal and nobody should treat it as a done deal. Her opponent just raised over $500K in one day, ans she's likely to confront a blitz of nasty ads

It's not time to sit back and relax: it's time to push

8. pollster.com shows that the polls are all over the map

I am guessing that the brutal negative ads against Brown will have a big effect, Brown has had some very far out positions.

20. Are many people learning from this that he really did
push an amendment that would allow Catholic hospitals not to give rape victims emergency contraception? It really seems a thoughtless thing to do to the woman involved.

16. PPP has a notoriously bad record and they are the only ones with Brown up
I think Coakley will win by 5-10 when she should win by 10-20. But a win is still a win.

17. I discount all internal polls by political parties unless they show their own guy down
The fact is polls done by political campaigns that they release tend to favor their own candidate by at least 5 points more compared to what the average among nonpartisan pollsters is.

19. This should have been no contest at all. Take heed, my friends.
HCR is a big issue in MA, and it may not be helping the Dem here.

So say my MA friends anyway.

22. Of course if she wins by less than 10 points pukes will claim a moral victory.
Of course a moral victory doesn't buy them a vote against HCR.
