What is metathesis?

Metathesis is the phenomenon whereby two sounds that appear in a particular order in one form of a word occur in the reverse order in a related form of the word. For example, in the Austronesian language Leti, the linear ordering of the final consonant and vowel of a word can differ depending on a number of factors. One factor is whether the following word begins with a single consonant or a consonant cluster (or geminate consonant).
