12. Theres no guarantee he will still have their support in 3 years
Like the rest of the poor/middle class, their lives arent seeing any improvements under Obama (at this time).

They see trillions to banks, then see their unemployment run out, or they lose their home, or they find themselves being forced to buy heath insurance.

As I said, theres no guarantee Obama will still have their support in 3 years, and theres nothing he's proposed that looks like it will benefit them over that time.

17. Thats a silly argument
The thread is one term or two, and the election to determine that is in 2012.......not now.

So tell me Einstein, what will he have accomplished to benefit the below $200,000 crowd by 2012?

Mandated health insurance?

Increased foreclosures?

A resurgence in good paying jobs by nicely asking Wall Street to bring them back from other countries?

Tough new regulations on TBTF banks that slaps their hands if they get out of line?

You seem to be suggesting that we hold such views because we don't know any better and that we'll "come around" because "hope doesn't last forever" when the reality is that all of us are only privy to the information at hand NOW.

You don't see how such an attitude can come off as patronizing?

Me, I want a President that campaigns on standing up to the corporations, the banks, and the health insurers to be a man of his word and deal with them.

Others only want another "W" in the win column, no matter how bad things get.

Such is life.

An assertion that isn't backed up by...anything.

People have legitimate disagreements with this administration. That doesn't mean they declare every person who disagrees with them an enemy. Likewise those people should not be declared enemies by those that disagree with them.

If the election was today I couldnt vote for him again.

Im really hoping he gets his sea legs in the office and throws out those DLC assholes he has been listening to and moves back to the guy I saw in the campaign in the next year or two.

If he does, then I will give him a second look, but its going to take a complete turnaround in his policies to get me to vote for him in 2012.

President Obama is struggling against the united front of Republicans who have opposed every thing that he has attempted to do. They are determined to see him fail and what do I hear from his not-so-loyal following: He has failed to accomplish a miracle against bastards that are willing to destroy the nation. I will be voting for him and every Democrat that runs for office and although I probably will not live to see it, I can only hope to see the Republican Party totally implode. The Republicans have become the sworn enemies of the Republic and I loath every damn one of them.

37. Hillary's probably planning that
I think it's possible that she might even challenge him for the nomination in 2012, the way Teddy Kennedy challenged Jimmy Carter in 1980. Other than the disaster wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, most foreign policy initiatives have been somewhat successful. Hillary was smart to take a job that kept her out of D. C. most of the time.

All that's needed is a split between them over something President Obama does, such as when Cy Vance resigned as Carter's Secretary of State over the failed Iranian hostage rescue. If you see such a thing, be prepared to see Hillary! signs in about another year or so.

92. Were you politically aware back in 1976?
I first voted for President in that year. I remember the relief at being through with the eight years of Nixon and Ford, of the disaster in Vietnam, the hyperinflation of the first oil shocks in the mid-70's, the stagflation that followed it, and all the rest. We cheered as Jimmy Carter and his wife shunned the limo they were supposed to ride in, and walked down the street from the inaugural parade stand to the White House. The draft avoiders in Canada were being pardoned, and we were going to get back to a government by someone not in the criminal class.

I saw the wheels come off it over the next four years. I saw people becoming disillusioned as we pursued another foreign military adventure in the Mideast (Iranian hostage rescue, epic fail) and gasoline prices start to climb in the late 70's. I saw bubbles being inflated and bursting, and then I saw the map turn Rethuglican on Election Night, 1980.

It may look like an imaginative fantasy to you, but it all unfolded before my eyes. Maybe others of my generation remember the very same thing.

95. Your post was really about Hillary tho wasn't it?
The woman who said http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/10/12/hillary-clinton-says-she-wont-run-for-president-again/">she wouldn't run again?:

Clinton, who lost the Democratic presidential nomination to Barack Obama, said "No" three different times when asked by NBC's Ann Curry "Will you ever run for president again? Yes or No?"

It's the same fantasy many folks, including myself for a short time, had about Al Gore. But as badly in debt as she left her 2008 campaign and as ugly as the primary was, I can't see her wanting to put herself or the party through that again.

120. The 70's looked pretty old to me when I was in my 20's
but that decade doesn't look too old to the baby boomers. The peak of the baby boom was 1957, and those people will be 59 in 2016. Hillary will turn 69 just a few weeks before Election Day that year. She won't look that old to the half of the boomers who were born before 1957, who will still be a substantial portion of the electorate.

That President you mentioned who only served 32 days in office? You forgot to say that it was William Henry Harrison, who died of pneumonia probably exacerbated by his long inauguration speech. If you think that medicine hasn't advanced since 1841, then you've lost credibility. In fact, just citing such an apples-and-oranges comparison to make your point puts your contentions in doubt for me.

Hillary's not going to be any more senile in 2016 than she is right now, and at this point in time, she's looking like the effective member of the Obama Administration. She picked that spot very carefully, I believe. Either she's going to be a successful part of a successful Administration that goes for eight years, or she's going to be the one bright spot in an Administration that has been marked by incompetence.

If the latter occurs, then some of the incompetence will be attributed to youth, and Hillary's age will be seen as an asset. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see this happening, but I wouldn't put anything past Hillary Clinton. She'll do whatever it takes to rise to the top, we saw it during Bill's Presidency, her Senate stint, and the 2008 Presidential race. Even if it's just for one term, she wants to be back in the White House.

131. We will see what we will see
I sure hope that I'm wrong, but I don't think so. In any case, Joe Biden will be 74 a couple of weeks after the 2016 election, and by your reckoning, too old to run for President. Hopefully, with a second Obama term, we will not have the Dick Cheney problem of a VP who is not heir apparent, and a consequent free-for-all that destroys whoever gets the 2016 nomination.

18. One and Done ...
... unless he replaces Geithner with a progressive, populist, non-Goldman Sachs Treasury Secretary.

... unless he starts seriously doing things for Main Street instead of Wall Street.

... unless he stops this idea of taxing union health insurance plans (and he won't get a "health insurance reform" law anyway if he doesn't).

... unless we're out of Iraq and getting out of Afghanistan.

Barack Obama has got a lot to do to reinvigorate the progressive activist base that worked to get him elected in 2008. Can he do it? Yeah ... but I'm less confident about that than I used to be.

The Indys are increasingly turning away from him.

Most Dem voters will still vote for him, but I don't believe his actions have really motivated most of them.

Really, though, the biggest factor will be the identity of his opponents.

47. Just out of curiosity....
Who would you support? Huckabee or Romney? Because if we aren't going to re-elect an incumbent, then the opposition will win (you know, the Repubs?) The only way any other Dem will win in 2012 is if Obama CHOOSES not to run. And that is really unlikely. But if it does happen, prepare for a VERY ugly drawn out campaign that will make 2008 seem like a vacation at the beach. If Obama is challenged in the primaries, it will show a seriously divided party. And thus, open the door to the Repubs. And they will win, despite their present chaos. Most likely Huck or Mittens. So which one do you prefer over Obama?

60. Skittles, he inherited 8 years of mismanagement and who in their
right mind would expect things to turn around in 11 months? Come on, give the guy some slack! I understand that people are impatient for change but it takes time and even his own people in the House and Senate are not supporting him.

One thing I disagree with though, this bipartisan shit has to stop, not one GOP voted for Health Care Reform and if President Obama still want this bs to go on, then he is walking into a trap of his own making!

38. LBJ won in a landslide- only to withdraw from the race 4 years later
If the administration and congress continue as they have been (alienating key constituencies- and pandering to the corporate right) and if unemployment outlook is as poor as expected- then Obama is beatable, by an ostensibly competent and moderate Republican.

Should gas prices spike and the wars continue unabated (in addition to the above) all bets are off even against a nutter.

We should of held our noses and voted for LBJ. I was too young to even think about voting, but I wish folks had supported Humphrey instead. The Civil Rights and other things would have progressed a lot further. Humphrey had to support his President, but who knows what he would have done when he no longer had to give even lip service to the Vietnam War?

46. People always talk about how sagging Dem approval ratings bodes well for the Repukes
And it's hard not to put it past voters, since Americans have the memory and attention spans of fruit flies.

But what people always forget is that demographics are changing. The whole white Boomer "Reagan Democrat" model is starting to fade, and it won't be long until whites are a minority in this country (which can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned). At one time, Latinos were seen as up for grabs, but I don't think they're likely to forget the GOP's treatment of Sotomayor, nor should they.

But here's something I wonder, and feel free to call me an idiot for this, but it's something I've thought about: do you think Obama really even wants a second term? I'm not saying it like "he better shape up if he wants to win again." I mean it more like "do you think he actually feels like serving another term?" He seems lost and disillusioned to me, and he doesn't seem to relish the job like Bill Clinton did. If he is disillusioned, I'd like to think he's gotten that way from seeing the sick, sad way that the corridors of power work, because that would at least tell me that he's still liberal at heart, but I don't even know.

67. I've wondered the same thing about whether he even will want a second term. The
way he's been seemingly hell-bent on facilitating every corporate-crime scheme that's further decimating the middle class and alienating just about everyone who supported him almost has a nihilistic self-destructive pall over it. If he did want a second term, it's got to make you wonder what the hell he's thinking. Unless he saw the White House all along as no more than a stepping-stone to a post-presidency life of wealth and privilege funded by that $20,000,000 from the insurance cartels, and a million or so a pop on the lecture circuit.

pretty ungodly bad to make almost any of the Confederates worth a gamble. That way people can cheer with glee for him as he oversees the final stages of the sell out to big money.

Then there is the factor that he's got potential to be the most effective President ever for the wealthy, the predatory class, and corporate power. After he gets done locking the people into a predatory monopoly/cartel for services that can't afford to use and do little if they can manage the out of pocket while making sure the upper crust gets to limit their medical liability he can get on with dismantling public education, funneling Medicare and Medicaid into the bogus "new" insurance system, and maybe privatizing Social Security just in his first term.

They'd never let a guy like that go, if he can hold minorities while slitting workers throats (and our own in the same stroke, obviously) then he can stay on forever and if his conscience bothers him they'll let a few crumbs slide off the table...for now as we acclimate to our new lives.

101. Just a fear I have
The right hates him and will never be convinced he's good for the country. And he's lost a good portion of the left who will never help him on future campaigns. As if the health care debacle isn't enough he now wants $33 billion more for war. So he doesn't have the support of many who worked hard to get him elected.

I expect the teabaggers and other far right crazies to start talking impeachment any time now. I have already seen a few bumper stickers. And I know a lot of the supporters he had a year ago won't defend him when impeachment comes up.

Who will he be facing at the next election? Almost surely either Romney or Palin, given the strong "royalist" tendency of the GOP--it's Democrats who like new faces for president. Palin's appeal is too limited for her to become president, and Romney will alienate the base with flip-flops and his bland personality. Plus, Obama has a punishing charisma advantage over either, and in every election since 1960 where there's been a big charisma gap, the more charismatic candidate has won. I'm not so confident about congressional Democrats' chances. The policies enacted so far aren't particularly popular, and congressional Democrats as a rule don't have Obama's charisma and can't count on having such poor competition at the next election as him. If Democratic policies remain unpopular, we could lose congressional seats in 2010 and 2012, even with Obama cruising to reelection on personal preferability and possibly some residual relief over no longer having a straight fool of a Republican president (shades of Democrats losing two Senate seats and gaining just eight in the House in 1996, even as Bubba got reelected with a fine 8% margin).

56. The Black Guy will get two terms.....
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 01:23 AM by FrenchieCat
To the great chagrin of those who thought they had voted for a Tall Tan Kucinich....
and who lost the primaries, and then transfered all of their specialized hopes and wishes,
onto the actual Democratic Candidate,
who did not run in this election promising to padlock Insurance Co.,
close down banks, provide single Payer Health Care, rid the world of corporations,
establish a Dept. of peace and proclaim terrorism the doing of the CIA,
cut the defense budget in half to give the money for programs for not only the poor
but for the middle class, hike the taxes of high earners back to pre JFK rates,
Kick Lieberman's ass literally, or pound his fist on the table, while ramming laws
through Congress even if he doesn't have the votes.

Nope, Obama will get his two terms,
because Kucinich can't win an elections for the Presidency,
in these United States, even if those who support him lives depended on it.

So yes, the Black guy will get two terms....
and if he doesn't, then a Republican will win,
cause Black folks and minorities will be damned
if they vote for some other candidate,
considering that by the time the election rolls around,
as he did his first year, Obama will have established more beneficial Policies
for the American people than any other President in history.

Like Rachel Maddow said this evening, Pres. Obama has accomplished more in his first year,
than any other President in History.

For some, that hurts.

Keep in mind, that I'm pretty good at predictions;
I predicted that Obama would win the Presidency back in October of 2007....
and that McCain would be the Republican Nominee back around the same time.

78. Probably 2
If Obama carries the west coast, the northeast and the northern midwest as well as Hawaii (states that dems have carried fairly easily the last 4 elections) that alone gives him about 259 electoral votes. After that all he needs is 1 swing state. Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, Virginia or Florida.

Failing that he can get a combo in the southwest. Either colorado & nevada or colorado & new mexico.

I doubt Obama loses in 2012. He isn't perfect, but he is much more sane and competent than anything being put up by the GOP.

If the wars drag on, he'll likely lose in the primary. If the bad economy drags on, he'll likely lose in the general, even if he wins in the primary.

If he ends the two wars and the economy is significantly better by mid 2012, he'll be a two term president. Otherwise, probably not.

to win in '84 handily. The economy by November 2012 will be in recovery and unemployment will be down. Those who say health care will defeat Obama are nuts. Not getting health care didn't defeat Clinton and Obama will get a bill and claim victory. It will be less than many on DU want but it will be better than doing nothing. The economy decides if an incumbant president is re-elected not health care reform.

and everyone will fall all over themselves blaming Obama, even though it will probably be something completely unpreventable - a suicide bomber someplace in America, or the Tim McVeigh truck bomb scenario or something along those lines.

The TV and media will go absolutely bonkers blaming Obama and all Dems for not keeping us "safe". They're already lining this up with the recent coordinated Repub effort to assert that "no terrorist event" took place during Bush's tenure.

The Republicans will sweep into victory with a new contract on America that makes phase one of the Patriot Act look like a comic book.

Most of America will be on virtual lockdown, "Liberals" will effectively be all but outlawed, if you post progressive thoughts on boards like DU you will be scrutinized as a potential domestic terrorist. On second thought, you won't be posting progressive thoughts on boards like DU because boards like DU will disappear. All employment will have a Monica Goodling aspect to interviews where you might be asked to prove you're a Good Republican as we descend into Bathism, like Iraq.

127. Two term... seeing as nothing has changed his "Hope/Change" campaign should be a success in 2012.
See the savvy of Barack Obama's campaign?

1) Get elected on riveting Hope/Change campaign.
2a) If he makes changes, people like him and reelect.
2b) If no changes are made, use a a proven winner - the riveting Hope/Change campaign.
3) Nothing to see here people... move along.

129. I would say Obama is in danger of being a 1 term president.
He has deliberately put off members of his own party and independents.

Obama has continued and deepened the Bush wars, and has stumbled badly on health care.

Almost all of Obama's significant decisions have been for the corporations.

For this, I do not think he will be rewarded a second term.
