Standing on the west steps of Salt Lake Community College's south-city campus, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon announced Tuesday that he will seek the governor's seat this year with a campaign centered on strengthening schools and achieving statewide energy independence within the next decade.
"I believe things can be different," Corroon declared, eliciting cheers and chants from a bundled-up crowd of nearly 300 supporters. "I believe that Utah's best days are ahead of us."
At Corroon's side were his daughter and two sons, each toting handmade signs sketched in a bright-colored marker. The kids shivered, but smiled.
"My dad is the best," one sign urged in squiggly block letters. "Make him governor."
"Get out of your seat, vote for Pete," declared another with a drawing of Superman in the corner.
