The Democratic campaign for governor glowed with intrigue Wednesday as word of Denise Ilitch's White House meeting spread.
Michigan AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney said it shows only that Ilitch's adviser has good White House connections.
"We don't know Denise's position on any issues yet. We're going to talk to her and find out," Gaffney said. "We don't know how strong a candidate Denise would be in a knockdown, drag-out governor's race. We're going to try to get an idea of that."
Gaffney's cautionary remarks suggest that although Ilitch's business pedigree is strong, the Democratic race remains wide open.
Ilitch's Washington sojourn stirred more gossip in a Democratic race blown open last week when presumed front-runner Lt. Gov. John Cherry dropped out.
