"I can't remember the last time I felt such overwhelming rage... toward the Republican Party"
A must-read letter to Andrew Sullivan from one of his readers:

We have heard a lot from those furious that Obama has not solved all our problems overnight, how they feel that this country has somehow been taken away from them, how they feel a disconnect from the president. But maybe it's time for a different kind of rage - the kind this reader feels and I want to second, :

The past year has been a very difficult one for me, personally and professionally. I've been up a lot more than I've been down, and I've been angry and frustrated with life, as we all are at times.

I simply cannot grasp what motivates these people, what compels them to thwart even the smallest attempts to clean up the enormous destruction they wrought under Bush and Cheney. Irresponsible, hateful, mendacious, sleazy, destructive - these words do not even begin to describe them.

I am unemployed and have not found a new job after almost a year of searching. I have a mortgage. I also have a preexisting medical condition, thanks to emergency surgery I had to undergo nearly 18 months ago. My unemployment benefits expire in five months, my COBRA not long after. Like untold millions of Americans, I am preparing for the worst as the economy slogs through its agonizing turnaround.

I voted for Obama with proud but open eyes, knowing full well not just the magnitude of the tasks he faced, but the pure, unrestrained malevolence of his opposition. Health care reform will unquestionably help people like me. And now some low-rent hairdo, whose sole claim to fame is posing naked for some ladies' magazine way back when, may happily destroy whatever chance this country has at moving in a more just, humane, and morally and fiscally responsible direction.

As you stated, the Republican Party of this new century is shot through with nihilists. Unabashed nihilists. But what leaves me shaking with anger damn near every day since President Obama's inauguration is the pure smugness and nonchalance of their nihilism.

Palin, McConnell, DeMint, Boehner, Cantor, Rubio, Scott Brown and the rest of the Ailes- and Limbaugh-warped GOP: Would you trust any one of these goons to greet you at Wal-Mart, much less govern our country? The question answers itself. They literally care nothing for America. They have spent the past decade doubling the national debt, running up record deficits, indulging the depradations of Wall Street, expanding Medicare by a trillion dollars while refusing to cover the cost, needlessly and shamelessly cutting taxes by two trillion dollars while again refusing to cover the cost, degrading the Army and Marine Corps to the point where it will take them both at least a decade to recover, jailing and torturing detainees and lying about it, manipulating intelligence in order to invade Iraq out of some sick neocon thirst for vanity and glory. I could go on, but that would take hours, and only make me angrier.

Suffice to say that Republicans lecturing the country about fiscal responsibilty, economic recovery, governing - or anything else, for that matter - would be like Mick Jagger lecturing Mother Teresa about excessive promiscuity.

Karl Rove and Dick Cheney were thankfully not present at America's founding. But their political descendants will certainly be present at America's demise.

For Gods sake, vote for Coakley. Not for Coakley. For the rest of us.

59. We're Originally...
...from NE Ohio so I feel your pain, economically speaking. We left there in 1995 for a reason.

About twenty years ago, I took a summer elective in History at my university and I met a guy who was fresh out of his Ph.D. program at Emory. We got on quite well after about a week and ended up having lunch together on more than one occasion. During one of those unguarded moments (and thanks to a few beers), he told me that as nation states evolve they usually get themselves into positions in which there are two sides of an issue that become so entrenched there's simply no way to settle except with blood. That's happened to the United States only once before and he thought (this was in the summer of '89) we were due for another one. Nowadays, we're likely overdue. That would explain so much of the social tension we're all feeling lately.

It's only a matter of time until we're in the streets with these people. It's time to accept it and get ready for it.

81. Stiglitz was on with hartmann today.
He said that the fact we haven't already made a move to take the country back probably means that we won't. If we were going to fight back, we would have done it already. The people in any civilized country would have strung most of the Bush administration and Big Media up from lamp posts years ago.

Face it - we're beaten, and are going to have to wait until the banksters do themselves in to start the long haul back. Or maybe we will just end up like Haiti.

why did they give it up so easily? I expected more of a fight, even martial law. But in my conspiracy, paranoid mind, I think while we are enjoying the site of the dying Palin Party the neo-Democrats (DINO'S) ala Sen Arlen Specter are picking our pockets. They are wooing the administration at the expense of the left. IMO CorpAmerica has decided to buy into the Democratic Party and let the Palin Party rot for the time being.

But I can't remember the last time I felt such overwhelming rage toward a group of people as I have felt toward the Republican Party and the conservative movement since President Obama's election.

I watched the documentary on the History channel yesterday, "1968" and if you think the Democratic Party is divided now you should watch this documentary. The Democrats must get together and get behind Obama no matter what. The division of the Democratic party back then brought us Richard Millhouse Nixon. We really do not want to go there right now.

26. So, if the Republicans have done all these horrible things
(and I agree 100% that they have done these and worse), why hasn't Obama's Justice Department indicted them for the worst of what they did: war crimes?

Torture, invading a country on false intelligence without properly or verifying the intelligence, stealing from the people by awarding contracts or entering into a conspiracy to award contracts to companies in which they had interests and which overcharged, eavesdropping illegally. The list goes on and on.

No indictments, barely audible condemnations. Why so little energy behind setting the record straight?

We cannot have reconciliation with the Bush administration until we have fully disclosed all information concerning their crimes and shared the evidence of their crimes with the public. We don't have to have trials, but the records that show what they did, the crimes they committed should be released, made public and NOW.

I want President Obama to succeed, and you and I know what criminals the Bush administration harbored. But most of the American people are oblivious to the facts. What percent of Americans still think that Saddam Hussein supported and sponsored Al Qaeda? Trust me. It is not negligible.

WE have to start by admitting that we have a problem. And that problem is that we elected criminals to run our government.

77. We have a problem all right, but it's not about elections...
It's that when people are too comfortable they don't fight or do anything that really amounts to much. They sit around and do things like posting angry messages on forums, which no one of note or influence reads, and they sulk. It's energy and time wasted. There are a 150,000 people on DU, most of whom would probably claim to be above-average regarding those who are politically apprised and politically motivated, but I don't see any mobilizing here.

27. We've been painfully brainwashed from the last
administration to embrace fear of every single kind. Drummed into our heads and practiced against us...and most of it comes from within our country, not without. It is the Republican way of doing things. Pound you with negativity, bullying, brutality of ideals, deprivation of common sense/decency and fear...as long as they get their fckin re-election. THERE IS NO CARE OR COMPASSION LEFT in the Republican party. NONE. DEVOID.

Too many very little people have too much power. Too many of the negative, self-serving people. At this point in history, they are the Republican party. They never let up on the breaking down of America.

Democrats have yet to develop the right fighting tactics, and it is our most important fight. FIGHT for our country, HERE, damnit. DAMNIT. We have one of the most intelligent Presidents in history at the helm. Inexperienced, but as smart as they come. I'm not giving up the hope that the strength of his intelligence CAN overcome this billious obstructionism. It isn't the same world of seemingly political bipartisanship that he may have grown up in. It is the Republican party of Bush/cheney and hate and "I don't give a flying fuck about decency, Americans or the right thing to do"

Losing Massachussetts will only defeat the Dems if they allow it to. Do NOT give it such power and for crying out loud (literally) TAKE back the decency of our country!

31. Some day soon ...
... when the war crimes trials start, we will see Cheney, Bush, et al. in the dock. I do not want to be one of the enablers who did nothing to stop them, and whose passivity let them get away with so much that is so wrong.

The "banality of evil" (Arendt) is so obvious that there is no denying it. I hope that the Obama Administration will stop being complicit in continuing to cover up and de facto excuse the Bush crimes. I do not believe that healing can occur without clearing up the infection or excising the cancer that the Reagan-Gingrich-Bush-Bush crew have implanted so deeply into America.

Time to show people that decisions and behaviors have consequences, and that these awful costs will not be borne by the population at large, while the "usual suspects" continue to enrich themselves at our expense.

48.  Chenney attacks on Obama are to distract from his complicity in
war crimes. Obama didn't want to polarize the republicans further by persuing this
and having congress tied up in hearings and investigations and neglecting the peoples business.
Chenney and daughter are very aware of potentially serious problems; are taking offensive posture
to detract from possible confrontation with the justice dept.
If they try to obstruct Obama so much that nothing can get done; he may change his mind an expose
the former administration,before 2010 elections.

45. COAKLEY! COAKLEY!
If that manslut Scott Brown wins, a zombie Ted Kennedy will rise from the grave and eat him up during his swearing in. Or, less violently...

"Yo Mr. Brown, I'mma let you finish, but I'M THE GREATEST U.S. SENATOR FROM MASSACHUSETTS OF ALL TIME!"

I think it'd be funny to see Scott Brown standing up for family values if he were to become a US Senator. Maybe he and Levi Johnston should've done a Republican nude shoot together for Playgirl. But beyond Brown's silly Cosmopolitan photo, I really think that based on his (lacking) merits make him unfit as Kennedy's successor. Wikipedia lists his political positions as: he's anti-tax, sort of homophobic, sort of pro-choice, pro-Afghanistan war, anti-health care reform (but he did support his own state's health care reform bill!), and anti-cap & trade (even though he used to support it). Not my type of politician.

49. The problem is not Republicans
It's blue-dog Democrats, some of whom (like Rep. Bart Stupak) have high liberal scores from Americans for Democratic Action but nevertheless voted with Republicans on issues like taking abortion out of the House version of the health-care reform bill.

When you're in the majority, you have to act like you're in the majority. If you have a substantial majority (especially with 60+ votes in the Senate), you have to act like you have a substantial majority, not just a slim plurality.

The Democrats had the majority and couldn't get it done. That's what pisses me off. Those who stood on the sidelines and were wishywashy should be called out. They NEVER displayed any unity or strength. I think about how hard we all worked to get Obama elected and to get the Democrats the house and the senate... It's heartbreaking!

56. Angry at Dems, not Repugs
I don't expect anything else from the Repugs. The party of Nixon is still the party of Nixon.

What DOES make me angry is my final realization that corporations now own a >51% stake in the Dems. Obama and Co. have finally convinced me. I used to think the Clintons and NAFTA and Graham, Leach, Bliley were aberrations. I was wrong, and in denial. No more. I now see what the Dem party really is.

And so it goes...

69. First of all you
have anger but when you say the dems what do you mean.We have only had the sixty in name only.Have you heard of blue dogs. They are supposed to be conservative members of the democratic party. But in the opinion of everyone else they lean more to repug behavior. What we are all mad at is the ability of the democratic party to stick together to get our message out in a clear and concise manner.Because our President took on a hot holy mess when he took the oath of office.Hell he was working at being the President before he even took the oath of office.say you are not mad at the trolls.Well maybe i should remind you of some things that happened under the Dubya/Shooter era.We lost over an eighty billion dollar surplus, failure to act on daily intel briefing which led to 9/11,war in Iraq, war in Afghanistan,Gitmo and torture, illegal wiretapping of American citizens,Hurricane Katrina,Outing a CIA agent,Tarp,Halliburton and military contracts, improper military equipment and vehicles, estimated twenty-four percent drop in Americas wealth vanished, selling nuclear technology for mangoes, fires in california, goldman sachs, hank paulson, karl rove, condoleeza rice, rumsfeld, electrocution of soldiers while trying to shower, estimated nine hundred billion dollars missing from Iraq, casualties of war,a massive deficit into the trillions, and anything else that is fucked up with this country.Welcome to DU

83. Re: if some dems fail, all fail
Please don't go breaking it out into conservadems, blue dogs, progressive dems, etc. If some of us fail, we all fail. We (Democrats) failed. If the party cannot succeed with the Presidency, majority House, supermajority Senate, then it fails. The party failed. We gave it a golden opportunity, and it failed us. It succeeded for its corporate masters, however. So success v. failure is a matter of perspective. We can either try to repair the party (which we just tried and failed) or we can go on to another. This is looking more appealing.

As for the litany of Republican villainy, so what? What do you expect of the party of Nixon? I expect no better.

92. No such thing as fail
This is a minor setback. There are a number of open seats because of retirement and plain old just tired of the political game. And there are those that have gotten their share of the pie and are getting out before they get fucked up.This is not Nixon's fight.Besides when it comes to Nixon he was impeached. Then he resigned. But when it comes to fake ass Democratic Blue dog politicians or the repugs I am not going to lay off them. Our President cannot control grown men and women who have already sold their soul to the devil for the benefit of their own prosperity. So when you say you don't want a litany of the repugs. You can get back with me in a month with thirty eight days. After eight years of what they did to the American people I will scream it off the roof tops until I can't scream anymore. We were in a living hell.and now they expect our President to end all of he corruption in a year when IT has been in place for hundreds of years.

62. Why is the MA race even close?
The problem is that Obama did not educate the electorate properly on the failings of the past. Sure he briefly discussed what he inherited but in no way did he adequately expose the Right for all of thier failings and tie them together with what is happening today.

He also didn't hold anyone accountable and gave everyone a free pass. That is coming full circle now to bite his party.

The Pubes decided early on to stoke a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment in America, it will hurt Democrats much more then Pubes..

So will Obama now admit finally that Bi-Partisanship cannot work in America if it is all give on the part of Democrats and all take on the part of Repukes?

Maybe he will enlighten the electorate at his SOTU.

Exactly - holding them accountable would have established the miserable track records of the past 8 years; impeaching Bush for lieing about Iraq for a start - but the arrogant House Speaker took impeachment off the table....Now the revisionists are rewriting the history of the past 8 years and they will resurrect/rehabilitate this administration in the same way that Reagan's administration was rehabilitated - remember Reagan National Airport was named for that clown even after he fired all of the air traffic controllers.

91. It's a challenge now. Isn't it?
I snowboard. I'm not that good at it yet and I would like every slope I go down to be just the right slope--not too steep for me to practice what I need to improve.

But it doesn't work that way. The perfect slope has a part that's really too steep for me. So do I not go down the slope?

Of course not. I deal with the steep part as best I can. I take the slope as it is, not the other way around. If I want to snowboard that's what I have to do.

Real life is like that.

68. K&R. I hate them for tossing out bipartisanship over a decade ago.
For making politics into just a Win or Lose game, all about appearances, while endangering our national security and destroying our standard of living.

They are cruel and inhumane.

But they have been that way since Ronald Reagan came in pushing his lies. Busting the unions, tossing out green energy programs, starting up more illegal wars, cutting taxes for the super rich, etc.

That's why it hurt me so much to see any attempts to be bipartisan with them. They gave that up years ago.

74. Angry because he hasn't solved our problems overnight? Surely you jest.
Obama would've woken a powerful, sleeping giant had he taken a principled and tough stand on the things he said he was going to do -- and failed. Can you imagine the outpouring of support from independents and progressives if he expended every bit of energy and political he had and had been stonewalled by the system? He would've ignited Americans as they have not been in quite a while. Seeing which way the winds blew, Democrats in the senate would've had no choice (not to mention plenty of incentive) to get on the right side of these fights, and the resulting momentum would've been something to behold. But instead he showed himself to be weak, of more talk than action, and willing to compromise on everything under the sun. He has revealed himself to be a man of few principles, and no real backbone. Don't you dare imply that progressives are angry because he didn't reinvent the world overnight. This seething anger isn't about that at all.

This is not a war of democrats vs. repbulicans. It's a war among the have and the havenots. A war between the powerbrokers and the powerless. Please... the fight between washington democrats and washington republicans is bad theater: they are both beholden to the powerful interests who truly run this country and this world. Wake up man.

Round them up & stick them in the camps?

Get real.

A. Learn to deal with reality
B. Negotiate decent legislation for the American public without backroom deals and special exemptions for preferred groups.
