because I do lean more toward the Farmer-Labor side. I've been active for 38 years and stuck with the party through thick and thin, but the insurance bill is pretty much the last straw for me and I'm not going to vote for any jerk who puts a "D" or "DFL" after his/her name.

Think of it as tough love, we don't do the party any good when we let it think that we're happy with every stupid move "our" elected officials or the party leadership make.

The filibuster used to be an extraordinary measure used sparingly, not a mundane tool to politically embarrass and frustrate the party in power. Don't believe me? Did you know the margin used to be 67 votes for cloture from 1917 to 1975, and before that, NO cloture! Can you imagine if the opposition party did then what the republicans are doing today? Government would have been utterly powerless. But no, the opposition party had more integrity, they governed in good faith and not with the sole goal of derailing the party in power with the hope of benefiting.

The Republicans are conducting shameful and unprecedented obstruction, and somehow that becomes the Democrats' fault.

And the 10 reasons Bush did whatever the fuck he wanted were:

(1) he has an ideologically narrow party
(2) the Democrats did not filibuster as a matter of course
(3 - 10) 9/11. 9/11 did wonders for Bush's presidential power. It made the country unify behind its government, it squashed media criticism of the president, it invoked such a fear in the nation that we would tolerate almost anything to feel safe no matter how legally and ethically questionable.

Remember George "AWOL" Bush & Dick '5 deferment' Cheney getting a pass & John 'purple heart/war hero' Kerry's strength was questioned. Even Obama didn't do politics better than the republicans. He didn't employ 3a.m. phone call ads. He won because people were tired of politics as usual & McCain sucked. Well politics as usual are back & the dems aren't very good at it.


So I would say the number one reason Dubya did whatever he wanted was because the democrats were scared of the political cost of opposing him (remember keeping our powder dry?).
