"with little notice from the public, Obama has been steadily rewriting a major area of American policy — the environment — from global warming to gas mileage rules, logging to endangered species. Many of his initiatives have particular impact on California.

After methodically reversing many of the Bush administration's environmental policies, with little help from Congress, Obama is drawing criticism from Republican and industry leaders who say his actions threaten job growth, as well as cheers from environmentalists who call the changes overdue.

"This is by far the best first year on the environment of any president in history, including Teddy Roosevelt," said Carl Pope, national executive director of the Sierra Club, in San Francisco. "Most presidents have done their best environmental work late in their term. This is a very, very strong opening...

...."It really is a new day," said Mary Nichols, chairman of the California Air Resources Board. "When things clear up a little bit and people can focus on things other than whether they have a job, he'll get more credit."

10. I'm proud to see Barack cut ship sulfur emissions & his mpg initiatives. But I'm seething pissed

that the US is going to lend $2 billion dollars to Brazil's state-owned Petrobras
to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil's Tupi oil field near Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil's planning minister met with the White House back in August and things are moving along swimmingly.

Most likely, the US will contract nearly all of that oil when Petrobras strikes black gold.

So kudos to Obama for not renewing outer continental shelf drilling in the US and the California coast.

But BIG, BIG THUMBS down for enabling the RAPE of Brazil's pristine shoreline in the pursuit of oil.
It would have been much wiser to loan funds toward Green alternatives. I can't for the life of me figure
out why he didn't push that to the Brazilians.

Feeding the Tragedy of the Commons in Brazil to suit our nation's energy thirst.

soybeans for conversion to biofuel?

13. No, the folly of biofuels in exchange of rainforest clear-cutting has been borne out. Since Brazil

has been been leapfrogging US technology in other ways for years, such as in telecommunications,
electric gridding, aerospace and other avenues.

Don't you think $2 billion to finance the construction of a couple of solar energy or wind energy plants
would have been a much Greener alternative than more Biodeisel?

I do. I spent a week in São Paulo back in 2005. The amount of black soot that comes out of vehicle tail pipes
is shocking. We got nauseous just walking next to the road; Brazil still needs a lot work in the area of
vehicle exhaust emissions.

It would have started them in a better direction to loan Brazil $2 billion for Green energies, than to
help them continue down the dirty road of fossil fuels and carbon consumption.
