4. I think a good portion of those independents are former republicans
who haven't abandoned all of their conservative beliefs, but can't stand the teabagging-neocon- theocracy-xenophobic-racist stuff going on in their former party.

and I think it's the opposite. I think many Republicans are now calling themselves independents because they are the "they want their country back" teabaggers. They want to be able to say they didn't support Bush on the bailouts, though truth be told - they would vote for him again in a heartbeat.

I think what you say is also true, but those Republicans became independents over 4 years ago. Then there's the libertarian leaning independents energized by Ron Paul's campaign whose heads exploded by the bank bailouts, stimulus, auto bailouts and pretty much anything on a Democratic presidential agenda - regardless of how "right-leaning" or "corporatist" some on the left say he is.
