5. Public Option

The Public Option I think would follow the same trajectory of Medicare legislation in 1965. I am not an expert on the history of medicare's inception, but I think it was a hard fought win by Dems with fearsome Republican opposition. Once it was in placed and tweaked a little bit, it was widely appreciated by those it was intended to serve.

I think the same exact thing would happen with the public option. If they put it in place, say, TOMORROW, that would give voters enough time to realize how magnificent it is and how much it benefits the lives of the poor and middle class.

That public satisfaction would insure a Democratic landslide in 2010.

However, it seems these days that all people in elected office feel they are there to preserve the status quo and also serve the Corporations by taking away even more from the people.

Dems don't seem to want to win or be in the majority at all because it takes away their excuses for being so ineffective. Like if we had 95 Dems in the Senate instead of the current 59 they still wouldn't get anything done!

60 - (57 + 1) = 2 votes shy - now

So we might as well give up on all progressive legislation, including healthcare, for the remainder of this year and work on getting a net gain of 2 Senate seats. If successful, we can finally get some shit done next year.

17. Medicare was widely popular

Depending on the poll, the public option has polled either nearly as high as Medicare polled in 1964 or 1965 (according to Gallup, Medicare had 63% support in 1965) or equally high. However, the industry's effort against HCR made the landscape very different than it was in the 60s. The last 30+ years of the GOP beating the anti-big government drum has had a lasting effect. The effort to enact real HCR needed to be strong, decisive, and confrontational. Cutting deals with Pharma to get their support was the wrong approach. The key was using public opinion as a weapon against the Corporations and the Politicians in bed with them.
