What about a constitutional amendment
banning corporate money in political campaigns and explicitly saying corproations are not people! It would be an end run around the
right wing of the Supreme Court. Would this be feasible?

1. Not enough votes
It takes Congress and State Legislatures to pass amendments, that would not be feasible.

17. 3/4th or the states have to ratify the Amendment
That is why it is so difficult and why there are so few amendments.

Constitutional Amendments to be viable really require broad national consensus

13. It takes years to do this so maybe by then they will have them.
If there is really a populist revolution going on in this country I'm not sure that it will be quite as hard to get the votes.

There are 27 amendments to the constitution with the last being done in 1992. So it can be done. Especially in an anti-corporate atmosphere that we are in. It has to get started fast though before the corporations saturate all air time with propaganda.

7. Wouldn't get any amendments passed in the 21st Century
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 07:00 PM by depakid
because America's still stuck with an archaic 18th Century model of government.

There's a reason why no other nation (aside from historical artifacts in Liberia and the Philippines) uses the American system.

14. Very difficult but possible. It will take any number of years to happen if we can get the momentum
Crashing the economy by refusing to pay all debts and minimal spending might be the most effective thing to do but obviously it would create a world of hurt.

Winning their game, by their rules, and on their terms will require more luck than can be imagined, much less relied on.

I suspect if an answer isn't pretty drastic and likely to cause suffering then it isn't one that has much chance of having effect.

15. Remember the Equal Rights Amendment?
You would think that guaranteeing equal rights for women is an idea that everyone could agree on. Guess what - it failed.

Amending the constitution is extremely difficult and time consuming.
