Obama's First Year in Office Marred By Many Broken Campaign Promises

President Barack Obama campaigned on the promise of "change we can believe in" and "an end to business as usual in Washington." After just one year in office it now appears that once again the American people were swayed by a politician that said whatever it took to get elected; with no intention of honoring the campaign promises that inspired voters to back him.

There are so many broken campaign promises from President Obama, websites like Politifact.com have sprung up to try and track them all. (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/; http://www.wnd.com/index.php?pageId=91286) Many of President Obama's broken campaign promises appear to smack of the typical, "business as usual in Washington." The corporate giants that command an army of well-paid lobbyists still seem to get what they want out of President Obama and Congress at the expense of the American people. An excellent example is the sudden disappearance of President Obama's promise to implement a windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry from his agenda.

Every day for two years, President Obama promised voters that he would enact a windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry if he were elected. In a statement released in June of 2008 he said, "I'll make oil companies like Exxon pay a tax on their windfall profits, and we'll use the money to help families pay for their skyrocketing energy costs and other bills." http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSWAT00963020080609

4. Remember when Bush promised a "humble foreign policy" on the campaign trail?
Remember when he promised "compassionate conservatism"?

I have some news for Lloyd Chapman, Small Business Advocate: maybe the windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry got a little bit changed when (a) gas dropped $2 a gallon from where it was at the beginning of the campaign and (b) we fell into the deepest recession since the Great Depression, during which time your taxing strategy tends to get changed rather dramatically.

And maybe, just maybe, he hasn't gotten to every promise yet in the first 12 months. There are 36 months to go.

15. Another Bush remembrance
"I'm a uniter, not a divider."

This country is now more divided than it was right before the Civil War!

Thanks, George.

5. Of COURSE he reneged on campaign promises...
that's what campaign promises are for.

Party platforms, too.

Name one President who actually came through on campaign promises? Rightwingers like Reagan count, too-- they're not too good at keeping their word, either.

For extra points, find ANY politician doing what he or she promised during a campaign. (Kucinich doesn't count-- he would count if he actually got anything done)

One wonders why anyone would bother listing Presidential campaign promises, since only the brain dead would care about them. Perhaps the brain dead are the ones needing some reminder about why they voted? Surprise, surprise, people don't vote on issues and promises, they vote for who they feel will handle the job best.

The dirty little truth is that as much as the public whines about "change" and throwing the bums out, the public is scared shitless of real change and politicians know this. They walk a fine line between giving people the essence of some sort of change and taking away things they are comfortable with.

"Change" really means give me more and give those other people less, which is kinda difficult to actually do and get away with. Even at best, "change" means don't even THINK about taking away the slightest bit of what I've got. Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you..." is as dead as he is.

Nope, the only promise a politician can legitimately make is "I will do what I think is best at the time, and try to screw you as little as possible while doing it." Nobody, of course, would ever say that, so they bullshit us.

13. I wanted it all and I wanted it now
It is a 4 year term for Christ sake and everyone is acting like the Obama Presidency is at its end.

Has there been a change in the Constitution that only gives a President ONE FUCKING YEAR to accomplish his promises?
