Irish Central: Bill Maher says Obama "Worse than Cheney."
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 02:55 PM by Captain Hilts
I've never been a Maher fan and certainly won't start now.

http://www.irishcentral.com/story/news/periscope/bill-maher-slams-obama-and-draws-gasps-from-crowd-82324907.html

...

Maher was not about to let the audience have their comfort zone. He sneered at Obama's giveback to the banks, doing a wicked caricature of Obama handing the billions out to A.I.G. and Goldman Sachs. He was also deeply critical --and hilariously so -- of Obama's failure to press home his agenda like Dick Cheney and George Bush were able to do despite what the electorate thought.

When Bill Maher, the most liberal stand-up comedian in America, is attacking Obama, then the President should be concerned., When he is comparing him unfavorably to Dick Cheney, then he had better be REALLY concerned.

44. It would be rare for anyone to convert to libertarianism as they became older:
the libertarians are doctrinaire ideologues, and people typically more concrete and practical in their thinking as they age

49. Lots of Obama supporters on the surface were really folks who
secretly hoped that he would fail. They just hated the thought of Hillary being nominated and than hated the thought of dim-wit Palin as VP.

80. No need to insult Obama supporters any more than Hillary supporters, etc., just
because many Obama supporters are wondering about his performance.

I was an early Obama supporter (before some people on DU knew who he was, even). I contributed to his campaign. I really thought he'd be his own man and become, possibly, another FDR.

I am disillusioned and disappointed.

I said early on that it was a mistake to select Rahm and other Clinton people to staff his cabinet and administration. Not that they're bad people or not good at their jobs. But Clinton people had a different agenda, and they are wired differently. It seemed to be it would be more of the same ol' same ol'. And that's apparently what happened.

We're Democrats and we respect democracy and the filibuster and we're proud not to be able to accomplish dick! Sheesh... get with the program!

7. I think he's more Libertarian than Liberal -- but I understand the point he's
making in that Cheney got things done (in his slimy, illegal, immoral way), Obama is running into difficulties getting his agenda implemented. I wouldn't take it to mean any more than that, though.

I'm guessing Maher would much prefer Obama and Cheney where they are right now, rather than how it was during the last administration, but I may just be projecting.

Jesus, the kind of ignorance on this forum is a little to blind freeperism. Jesus (yeah Jesus)how old are people here to only accept people are 100% in agreement with them.

That kind of threshold is ridiculous and to dismiss someone like Maher who has articulated many great points (ahead of Democrats) is just silly and immature.

77. That's a preposterous red herring
No one here objects to Maher because they aren't "100% in agreement with" him.

They object to him because he's full of shit, he's a sexist asshole, he's not funny, and he's frequently on the wrong side of important issues.

You're attempting to equate a well-considered rejection of this alleged comedian with a kneejerk response to someone who says unpleasant things. I'm sure that it's easier for you to think of it in those terms, so go ahead and frame it that way if you like. Heck, maybe some people even do reject him simply because they don't agree with him 100% of the time, but I haven't seen such people here on DU, and I'm certainly not one of them.

52. It's the criticism they don't like, the messenger is interchangeable
If Bill Hicks was alive and he said the exact same thing as Maher, the ODF (Obama Defense Force) would jump on him as well, complain about how unfunny he is, etc. They like to have these little two minute hates to have somebody to direct their ire against. If it's not Maher, it's Rachel or Nader or Howard Dean or Jon Stewart or KO or Kucinich. Gotta have a fresh body for the wheels of the bus that go round and round.

53. Au contraire--I've known that Maher was an asshole since before I'd even heard of Obama.
Lumping Maher together with Maddow, Nader, Dean, and Stewart just shows that you don't understand either comedy or political commentary.

And grouping Maher with Kucinich shows that you don't understand people's objections to either of them, since those objections differ widely.

And said Obama had to use homophobic hate preachers to 'prove his bona fides'. So your opinion about what is acceptable speech included outright slanders of millions of Americans. Your Donnie said that gay people are 'trying to kill our children'. And you defended that man as a worthwhile addition to Obama's campaign.
Bill never accused any minority group of being murderous. Donnie did. And you defended that man with passion.

40. I'll continue to support President Obama and
Edited on Sat Jan-23-10 05:01 AM by LatteLibertine
he has largely been rhetoric. If he wants to impress me hit those Wall Street bonuses at 50% or greater, separate commercial banking from the Wall Street casinos, don't allow banks that don't loan to citizens to take taxpayer money, make it so no bank is "too large to fail". Break them puppies up. It wasn't going to happen before and now that the Supreme Court has rolled back restrictions on corporate spending on federal campaigns, the chances are yet smaller. I mean honestly they let these robber barons "borrow" from the American people at an interest rate of 5% or less? Meanwhile they are hitting people with 21% and up. Fvck them in the ass. I deplore them all.

He might want to get rid of the corrupt status quo around him too. Most of those folks CREATED the mess we are in.

42. For me to say this says to me Bill Maher is not only a sexist ass but also ridiculously STUPID.
Obama has nothing to worry about.

50. Bill Maher is a self-absorbed pothead loner
I like some of his work, but generally he gets a big fat FAIL on his head from me.

To compare Obama to Cheney is the thought process of a zombie.

59. Where exactly did Maher say Obama was worse than Cheney?
Oh that's right HE DIDNT SAY THAT. I read the article about Maher's comments and then scanned the comments in here and am amazed at the idiotic knee-jerk reactions from DU forumers. Do any of you actually read things before posting?

I seriously doubt any of you have listened to Maher lately. He is on fire, and one of the last great liberals left.

60. Amazing isn't it? And typical
The goddamn lying op posts "worse than Cheney" when the blogger has zero quotes in the linked post. And then posters line up to take shots at Maher based on what a goddamned liar posted. That's what being sheep is all about. Stupid fucks. I see it on here too often.

83. And you know that from now on, any time Maher makes an important political point
he'll be dismissed as "the guy who said Obama was worse than Cheney".

It's so transparent.

61. I often disagree with Maher but I have to admit:
1) He is hilarious
2) He does very well with the ladies, especially given his physical attributes. Of course being rich and famous helps, but I still am impressed.

But those are no insignificant issues.

But no, not WORSE ... President Obama is still doing some major damage though ALMOST EQUAL to Cheney in the Foreign Affairs arena. :(
