Local politicians from both parties are lining up to fill the seat left vacant by Republican Scott Brown’s victory in the special US Senate election Tuesday.
Two Democratic candidates have announced their intentions to run for Brown’s seat, which includes Wrentham, Millis, Needham, Norfolk, Plainville, and parts of Natick, Sherborn, Wayland, Attleboro, Franklin, and Wellesley. Two Republican state representatives have also expressed interest, though they have made no formal announcements.
“I’m definitely running,’’ state Representative Lida Harkins, a Needham Democrat, said yesterday. “I’ve been in
for 21 years. I’ve given good service to the House. I’m interested in continuing my service in a different way.’’
According to Massachusetts Senate rules, Senate President Therese Murray has 14 days to announce a special election to fill the remaining portion of the term for the vacant Senate seat. A regularly scheduled election for the full term will then be held in November.
