WASHINGTON — The White House stood firm on the renomination of Ben Bernanke Monday, saying a second term for the Federal Reserve chief was vital to demonstrating stability in the US financial system.

"Chairman Bernanke helped the president and the economic team steer through some very turbulent times and rough waters," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

"I believe that it sends a signal to greater and overall stability to have his nomination approved without political games. And that's what we expect will happen later this week."

Bernanke's nomination, which is yet to be put to a Senate vote, appeared in deep trouble on Friday, after several Democratic senators withdrew support for his nomination amid public fury over his role in the financial crisis.

But the White House launched an emergency bid to shore up the nomination and Senate Majority leader Harry Reid and other influential senators threw their support behind Bernanke.

7. Bernanke is a "free" market idiot much like Greenspan (Only with a Phd, unlike Greenspan)

He did nothing to stop the 2nd Republicon Great Depression, not that he had a lot of time to fix much. He is a true believer in deregulation, much like Greenspan and believes in the magical hand of the market to cure most everything (as long as the banksters are bailed out).

I don't hear a lot of complaining from RepubliCONS about Bernanke. In fact the bushes loved him.

1. Use populist retoric ("Fighting for You") to make the people think i am on their side -- Note to self: great parlor trick to get them to stfu...and it works every time.
2. Ask President Rahm what to do next for Corporate America and Republicans.
3. Make daily rounds to water down as much main street legislation Pres. Rahm wants me to do.
4. Ignore the people when they raise concerns of not being taken seriously.
5. A boiling point occurs and the people start picking up pitchforks and torches because they feel they're being totally ignored.

Bernanke is a sign that he has no interest in changing course (no chance he will get rid of Geitner) and is only reacting temporarily to the upcry and will just pacify the situation by way of pretty words and get back to business as usual. Gotta feel pretty good if you are republican this coming November.

That's pretty harsh. I don't think Obama is as deceptive as you suggest. I feel Obama is fighting for the ordinary American, it's just that he's confronting such an entrenched system and It's going to take years, maybe decades to correct.
