White House Plans Civil Rights Concert in FebruaryBy DAVE ITZKOFF
Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson are among the artists who will participate in the White House’s first music event of 2010, the White House said on Tuesday in a news release. The concert, called “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement,” will be on Feb. 11 in the State Dining Room, and is timed to celebrate Black History Month. Other performers on the bill include Natalie Cole, John Legend, John Mellencamp, Seal, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Howard University Choir. It will be hosted by Morgan Freeman and Queen Latifah, and will feature songs associated with the civil rights movement as well as readings from famous civil rights speeches. The concert is the latest event in the White House music series started last year by Michelle Obama, and will be broadcast on public television and streamed live online at whitehouse.gov.
