Seth Meyers on Weekend Update SNL Last Night Really Did Say It Best
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/weekend-update-highlights/1198010/

"On Friday President Obama appeared before House Republicans in a historic televised Q & A and performed so well, after wards GOP Aids said that allowing cameras to roll like that was a mistake. Come on Republicans, are you on such a Scott Brown high you thought you could take down Barack Obama by debating him? You realize debates are why he is President, right? Seriously, all you do is complain how Obama is all talk and then you invite him to a forum that is literally all talk. That's like saying lets see how tough Aquaman is once we get him in the water. I'm not saying you were out classed but the whole thing was like the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the guy charged at Indiana Jones with the sword and he just shot him."

1. the Indiana Jones reference is pure gold
along with my other favorite line from the debate from John Cole:

If Mike Pence really is regarded as one of the deep thinkers for the GOP, I’m beginning to understand why they refused to admit Terri Schiavo was brain-dead.

20. Agreed
Watching the replay on C-Span was almost painful (not that I pity the GOP, but these guys don't even know better than to televise on of the best speakers of our time, fully prepared to do a Q&A with their gang) in how bad they looked. I liken it to watching my ex wife's divorce lawyer when we appeared at court for our divorce, she was sooo very bad that while I couldn't like her I did feel sorry for her.

if for no other reason than to see Weekend Update. Hope the producers get lots of positive feedback on that astute observation and have the writers work in some more zingers like that.

I'm a fervent believer in the power of humor - especially satire & parody - in political discourse. Democrats have the inherent advantage, as most of the humor takes the form of the little guy tackling the powers that be. Conservative 'humor' - if there is such a thing - makes fun of the downtrodden and less fortunate, so it comes off as mean-spirited & condescending. It's part of the reason why nobody has laughed at Dennis Miller (other than freeper troglodytes) ever since he allowed 9/11 to snap his fucking mind.

6. True, but I have to knit pick with Seth on that one.....
.... debates are NOT what Barack Obama is President. If he has one weak point on the campaign trail, it's debating. He apparently hates what is essentially a battle of the sound bites and we all know his inability to concentrate his argument into a concise answer. :)

Fortunately, by the time the GOP faced Obama in the debates in 2008, he had already survived Hillary (that's a compliment to her) and had, essentially, already won.

But that IS an interesting point .... and it will be interesting to see what they GOP will try to do with the Presidential debates in 2012.

Clarity: it was originally a long, choreographed fight scene.

36. Right. Ford was sick.
"The infamous scene in which Indy shoots a marauding and flamboyant swordsman was not in the original script. Harrison Ford was supposed to use his whip to get the swords out of his attacker's hands, but the food poisoning he and the rest of the crew had gotten made him too sick to perform the stunt. After several unsuccessful tries, someone made the off-handed remark, "Why doesn't he just shoot him and get it done and over with?" Steven Spielberg immediately took up the idea and the scene was successfully filmed. "

25. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 09:58 AM by paparush
Back story - Indy has been chased all over the kazbah, willy-nilly, helter-skelter, dodging this, escaping that. He's exhausted. The crowd suddenly parts and the "sultan in black" swaggers up wielding a giant sword, showing off flashy sultan-sword-moves. Indy, tired of all the shenanigans and unimpressed by the sultan's sword prowess, nonchalantly draws his revolver and dispatches the sultan.

28. What's so funny about that scene
is that there was suppose to be a actually fight between Indy and the sword guy...but Harrison Ford was like "Why don't I just shoot him?"

And BANG- one of the most famous scenes in Hollywood is born.

26. Victims of their own mythology.
One of the articles of faith in the Wingnut camp is that Obama can't speak without a teleprompter, can't handle himself extemporaneously. The Republicans are living proof that if you tell a lie often enough, you will come to believe it yourself.
