This has been the term uttered by every person against repealing DADT today-that if they DO repeal it, it will be bad for "unit cohesion," that straight people won't be comfortable around their gay fellow soldiers. That is SUCH bull.
I have never heard of ONE straight person in the military who felt "uncomfortable" if/when they discovered the person they're fighting next to is gay. And I bet that went for the likes of McCain as well as other Repubs. who served-who are now trying to win over the conservatives/teabaggers. :eyes:

1. We've been there -- in every trench and every foxhole-- |
|
We helped build the 'greatest' military in the world.
Much ado about not very much.

2. And everyone knows it... |
|
ESPECIALLY those who served.

3. I'd feel safer going into battle knowing the guy next to me had the hots for me. |
|
He might try harder to keep me alive.
Or at least take better care of me if I got wounded.

5. If people were really so uncomfortable about serving with gays |
|
wouldn't they be less anxious knowing who is and isn't gay? Not that I think that most soldiers care about whether or not somebody is gay, however. I'll bet unit cohesion hasn't suffered since 1993 with the tacit acknowledgment that gays ARE serving (albeit closeted) either.

7. There are gays in the military already and it would have caused problems |
|
already. The argument is dumb from these bigots.

8. What hurt the cohesion of MY unit was when gays were suddenly gone. Poof. |
|
We all knew why but nothing was ever said officially. No explanation. No time to say goodbye. We all worked so closely together. We had been through 18 months of training together and then on to our permanent duty. No forwarding addresses, no phone numbers exchanged. Just gone as if they had never existed. We mourned every loss like that as a unit, both for losing friends and losing great soldiers who were excellent at their jobs.

9. "Unit Cohesion" was the same talking point they used |
|
to try and stop integration in the army.
