Republicans' grade on civil rights: F

The Party of Lincoln falls short on civil rights.

The NAACP released its annual report card looking at how federal lawmakers voted on civil rights issues, such as hate crimes, D.C. voting rights, and expanding children’s health insurance. Glenn Thrush looks at some of the main points from the report:

All Senate Republicans got an F but two (Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Maine — they got C’s)

    – All Senate Democrats and Independents got A’s, B’s or Incompletes

    – Senator Arlen Specter, R-to-D-Penn., got a B

    All House Republicans but 6 got an F — 5 of those 6 got D’s — 1 got a C: Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.

House Republicans scored the lowest of an sub group.

    – All BUT 23 House Democrats got A’s, B’s or Incompletes

    – All Congressman who scored a 100% were Democrats

    – Of the CBC Members ALL but 2 got A’s, Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala., who is moderating his stances in prep for a gubernatorial run, got a B.

10. "R" is the lowest grade, of course.
It can even stand for Racist.

6. Economic decisions are civil rights issues?
Edited on Thu Feb-04-10 03:41 PM by The Northerner
#5 Economic stimulus package?
#6 Guns in the District of Columbia?
#9 Funding after-school programs?
#10 Allowing judicial modification foreclosure?
#18 Extending federal unemploymenet benefits?

I disagree w/ their position on #6. The right to bear arms is a right & nothing should infringe upon it.

Many of the issues they mentioned including extending unemployment benefits and the stimulus package have nothing to do with civil rights but are economic issues.

Much everything else I agree concur with on the NAACP's positions.

8. Once upon a time republicans
were the party that supported civil rights, that was before Nixon made a deal with the southern wing of the democratic party(dixiecrats),prior to that evil deal, republicans in the south were as scarce as hens teeth.

9. True
If you aren't a member of the most wealthy 1-10% of this nation there's no reason to go Republican. Thankfully, it seems they plan of opposing real financial market reform. There is no spin that be pulled from any of Frank Luntz's orifices that may save them from this folly.
