Ezra Klein: Obama doubles down on health-care reform
Edited on Thu Feb-25-10 09:27 PM by Pirate Smile
Obama doubles down on health-care reform

George W. Bush was known for his tendency to think in terms of black and white, good and evil, us and them. This was in opposition, supposedly, to the nuance favored by Democrats. But Barack Obama has his absolutist side, too: Some arguments are right, and some are wrong. Some are legitimate, and some are not.

And on health-care reform, Obama believes that his arguments are right. The basic structure of his plan is sound. The Republicans’ alternatives are inadequate. The problem is too serious to entertain thoughts of inaction. Comprehensive works better than incremental. Compromise only makes sense if the other side is willing to give something up in turn. Good policy will be electorally defensible even if it's not obviously popular.

The big story out of the summit is not that Republicans and Democrats extended their hands in friendship, but that the White House has dug its heels into the dirt. The Democrats are not taking reconciliation off the table, they are not paring back the bill, and they are not extricating themselves from the issue. They think they're right on this one, and they're going to try and pass this legislation.

Today was a boost for that effort.
The Democrats got hours to make their case, at an event they planned, with one of their own controlling the discussion. For that reason, I imagine that this will be the last bipartisan summit we see for awhile. The format is simply too kind to the president, and he takes advantage of it ruthlessly. When the camera panned, you could almost see Republicans wondering why they'd accepted the invitation.

The people who came off best were those who knew the most about the issue. Paul Ryan and Tom Coburn on the Republican side. Dick Durbin and Chris Dodd for the Democrats. But above all of them, the president, who got to enter, adjudicate and conclude discussions at will -- not to mention say when others didn't know that much about the issue, or weren't offering comments in good faith. That willingness to put himself above Congress, combined with the structure of the event, allowed Obama to fully dominate the proceedings, and he used the opportunity to firmly assert ownership over the health-care bill. This is now his legislation.

But for all that he's made the bill his own, it still has to make a final pass through Congress. Importantly, Harry Reid and other Democrats were not only using the word reconciliation, but defending it from attack. Obama joined them in this effort. But the question is what the handful of ambivalent Democrats in the House and Senate thought. Obama spent the day trying to convince them that passing this bill was right: Not just politically, but intellectually and morally. That was his argument for why he's still here, lashing himself tighter to this legislation, and why they should stick by him.

1. What does that term mean? "Double-down"?
Sounds like a Washington word, often used by Beltway pencil pushers and pundits.

5. Listening To Obama Dismiss Healthcare Savings Accounts Was Awesome
It showed President Obama's passion on this issue. It was bit of controlled anger that was great to see as a Republican touted Healthcare Savings Accounts as a cure all, and President Obama pointed out that such accounts are only used by those people with a lot of disposable income.

Short, but hey, the HC "reform" efforts don't affect Obama and his family. Nor do they actually affect anyone in the House or the Senate.

This was the one issue that I cared passionately about. And far from engaging in this fight last year when he had the mandate from the people and the mojo, he has waited a full year.

I no longer even know if the HC "Reform" Act contains the provision for the pre-existing crowd. And if it will do anything about the unmerciful,
tyrannical rate hikes in the insurance premiums.

But I am fairly sure that come what may, Rahm and his brother Ezekiel are set for the rest of their lives.

8. I wish it was garbage based. However, the headlines in the SF Chronicle the other day
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 02:44 AM by truedelphi
Were about the thirty nine percent increase for health insurance premiums that Blue Cross/Blue Shield (now known as Anthem) is going to be charging here in California.

I have no doubt that using his mesmerizing speech abilities, Obama will work hard to get the bill as it is passed on through.

But that bill is CRAP. However since his insurance is paid for by our government, as is the House members' insurance and the Senators' insurance, why do they care?

11. Enjoy the mandates.
Over the last 24 hours, people responding to how marvelous this HC "Reform" act will be have compared it to the "Great" Plan enacted upon the people of Massachusetts, where some self employed people just received notices that they are facing a 74% increase in their premium rates.

But so be it. As long as Obama and the scum bags like Rahm are set for life, what does it matter if people have to either pay for insurance or pay penalties?
