One reason our elected leaders sometimes seem to not "get it"
Edited on Fri Feb-26-10 10:17 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
The Washington DC metropolitan area is almost the only region where housing prices went up a lot from January 2009 to January 2010.

The Washington DC metropolitan area has some of the lowest unemployment in the nation.

Every single highway in the Washington DC metropolitan area is currently under major construction. Buildings are being erected. Cranes everywhere and such.

We all get a subjective vibe of the state of the nation from our daily surroundings. It is natural. Not blaming anyone, just noting that if you live in DC things don't look so bad.

I don't doubt that it's a shock for some congressmen when they return home to campaign.

Unrelated note: I posted something about the jobs bill a few days ago that held that it was a positive thing, albeit too small scale. That OP failed to account for the (obvious!) fact that some new hires will remain employed for more than a year so my math was wrong. The bill is even more effective than I was saying at the time.

1. My zip code has the highest average number of years of schooling. DC wins at Jeopardy
more than any other.

It's NOT the real world!

Capt. Hilts is a Grubby Groton Girl wherever she goes...

2. DC Is One of the Last Big Factory Towns In The US
A factory town is a place where there is one or more factories that hire up the majority of the residents in the town. That gives everyone a sense of economic security which breeds a sense of economic arrogance. You look down on someone who is struggling or out of work. You tend to blame the character of the individual, not the system itself, and why should you? You, and everyone you know, is doing quite well. You're working and making money. So, why can't that individual find a job with healthcare?
