Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice endorsed Meg Whitman for governor of California on Monday, in one of Rice's few forays into electoral politics since leaving office in 2009.
"In my experiences in and out of government, I find the most effective leaders to be those who maintain a clear vision, mobilize diverse groups, and inspire them to work together in confronting the most pressing challenges. That is why I am supporting Meg Whitman," Rice said in a statement.
Rice, who was provost of Stanford University before taking up the office of national security adviser in 2001, was briefly mentioned as a possible candidate for governor in 2010 but disclaimed any interested in elected office.
Whitman, the former CEO of eBay, is running in a GOP primary against state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, another wealthy former tech executive.
