Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday issued a decree ordering the government to cut his salary by half, his website said.
The decree also orders a 20% cut in spending by his office and regional administrations.
The move is aimed at providing funds for an initiative by the Party of Regions to raise the country's subsistence level and minimum wage.
Yanukovych's current salary has not been disclosed, but, according to the 2008 tax declaration, his predecessor Viktor Yushchenko received an annual salary of $61,000, which is a third less than that of his Russian counterpart.
U.S. President Barack Obama has an annual salary of $400,000, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown - $355,000 a year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel - $283,000, French President Nicholas Sarkozy - $348,000.
