NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The CEO of Tennessee's hospitality association is apologizing for sending an e-mail to a group of public figures that compares first lady Michelle Obama to a chimpanzee.

The Tennessean of Nashville reports that Tennessee Hospitality Association CEO Walt Baker's e-mail compares the first lady to Tarzan sidekick Cheeta.

Dir Sir,

I don’t live in Tennessee, so maybe you don’t care if I find your e-mail horribly offensive. However, I would hope that you would be aware that you have not represented your state well and, as a member of the hospitality industry, that such behavior is damaging to your state, your industry and your company.

Even if you expected an attack comparing a politician’s wife to a monkey to be taken as a political attack only with no racist overtones (and I have trouble believing anyone in this day in age is really that tone deaf), exactly in what context are your actions anything approaching decent taste or behavior? If you haven’t learned by now that business and your own political perspectives should be kept separate, I wonder if it’s even possible that you ever will.

To protect your organization and the undoubtedly good people who work there, you should resign before they suffer the negative consequences of your inappropriate and poor judgment.

Mr. Walt Baker,
I travel throughout the United States working with various organizations to conduct studies crucial to the health of our nation’s citizens. When I (and subsequent workers on these projects) go into a county or city, I inject thousands of dollars into the local economy through patronage of hotels, restaurants and general businesses. I was made aware that you, in your capacity of CEO of the Tennessee Hospitality Association, were found distributing an e-mail that was less than generous towards our First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Growing up in the Midwest during the sixties, I was exposed to this type of “humor” and I thought that as I matured the people of this fine country would as well. Your crass behavior assures me that you have not. There is no room in our society, at this time, for the hate you are spreading. You are a disgrace to the Hospitality Industry and as long as you represent Tennessee, I will make sure my business goes elsewhere.
