Democrats are dropping like flies in the North Dakota Senate race, cementing Gov. John Hoeven's (R) position as the odd-on favorite.
The Grand Forks Herald reports that former Secretary of State candidate and businesswoman Kristin Hedger (D) ruled out a run on Monday, less than a week after former Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp (D) also passed on the race.
Heitkamp was viewed as one of the Democrats' strongest possible contenders for the seat. Hedger is younger and less established, but was considered a rising star in state Democratic circles.
Democrats have been scrambling to find a strong candidate to defend the seat since Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announced in January that he would not run for re-election in 2010. The party's only candidate is state Sen. Tracy Potter, who himself acknowledges he is something of a David going up against Goliath.
