Alabama Republican gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne has landed the endorsement of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a nod that may help win over conservatives in a competitive GOP primary.
“Bradley Byrne is the conservative reformer in the race for Governor of Alabama," Bush said in a statement issued by Byrne's campaign.
The chancellor of the state's community college system under Gov. Bob Riley, Byrne is widely seen as the GOP establishment favorite in a race that also features former state Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore and businessman Tim James, the son of former Gov. Fob James.
In announcing Bush's support, Byrne's campaign indicated that the former governor would appear at a fundraiser for the candidate next month in Birmingham.
