Sen. Scott Brown Accused of Harrassing Female Co-worker in 1998

Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) was accused of harassing a female campaign worker in 1998, Gawker reports.

"In 2000, Scott Brown was a freshman state representative in Massachusetts. A few years earlier, he'd served on the Wrentham, Mass. Board of Selectmen. Jennifer Firth, a local mortgage banker who was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 1999, filed a civil defamation suit against Brown in July of 2000, alleging that he had harassed her when she worked on his campaign in 1998, and then tried to smear her reputation around town with forged letters and emails."

According to the complaint, Brown engaged in "offensive" conduct that caused Firth to quit his campaign; he then tried to "defame and humiliate" her by spreading rumors to her colleagues that she "had made sexual advances" towards him during his campaign.

Later, Firth withdrew her suit after her lawyer filed a motion to withdraw as her counsel.

He really seems in over his head. He seems to have bought the RW press view of himself, which could easily make him step on toes of people with far more power and seniority than he on the Republican side. His comment that the other Republicans followed him on the jobs bill was ludicrous. I guess he missed that Collins and Snowe crossed to vote for the budget and stimulus package. I seriously doubt that they waited to see which way Brown was going before they decided their positions.

He actually has a tough position. To be a rightwing favorite, he would have to be a DeMint clone - which likely would get him defeated in MA. But, if he votes like Snowe, he will quickly be hated by the RW of the Republican party - and they will turn nasty. Now, so far, he gets wonderful coverage in the MA papers for doing very little, but is that likely to continue?

(Before Brown took his seat, he spoke of how he would be back in MA all the time - and specifically said he would go to all his daughter's games. This was something he brought up - not something where he was asked. Now, as it was very near the end of the season, I figured he might - just to make a point. Now, he could have scheduled another weekend with McCain, but he didn't - and this person seems genuinely concerned that he was fooled. (I'm actually at bit surprised myself as it was her last game and he could have been there.)

An angry time, an over-confident Democratic, who when she realized she was falling behind did not have the political skill or personality to turn things around. I was surprised by that and several other comments because they did not sound at all like the typical RW Boston Globe commenters repeating Limbaugh and others. Some, like this one, seemed to really be MA people, swept up by a pleasant image and slogans - who are beginning to see through the curtain - and to worry that they made a mistake.
