Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson, trailing in public polls in the Republican Senate primary, is taking a sharply negative approach as he begins to introduce himself to voters.
While most first-time congressional candidates spend early money on positive, biographical campaign spots, Grayson has gone in the other direction, launching broadsides at GOP foe Rand Paul’s views on foreign policy and energy policy in three of his first four television advertisements.
Ads like those are generally aired by candidates running from behind, but in this case, Grayson, the establishment candidate, is trying to portray Paul as unacceptable to the Republican base.
“Voters deserve to know the differences between the candidates,” Grayson campaign spokesman Nate Hodson told POLITICO. “Unfortunately the media has not covered these differences or examined closely the records and statements of our opponent. That leaves the job to us, and we won’t shrink from that responsibility.”
