There was the rumor that Roberts was going to step down due to serious health reasons. Someone close to him said that he would - literally - die before he would let Obama replace him. We were discussing that it is so clear that we have 5 Rs and 4 Ds on the court. A hundred years ago it was a badge of honor for a judge if no one knew how he voted. Impartiality was considered a necessity for a judge to be fair and carry out his duties.

A respected college professor said that while he couldn't reveal his source, he had absolute evidence that Roberts would resign before the end of the day. Half way through the class he stopped and said he had made it up, but by then it had already been picked up by several websites. He wanted to show how quickly crap can spread on the internet with no one bothering to check the facts.

There are many factors that would require it to happen.

One would require Scalia to be gone.
He would have to be in the minority with absolutely no chance in his mind of ever in the majority again.
Law clerks would find it to be a hindrance as a law clerk to Thomas.
Organizations either refuse to invite him or they reduce the fee he receives. Possibly even requiring him to pay his own way from the fees.

I don't think that a person's spouse is an extension of that person. Let me ask this: if the spouse of another SCOTUS justice got involved with the operation of a group that advocated in favor of climate change legislation, or same sex marriage, or First Amendment rights, would you say that it was a "total" conflict of interest? Or would it only be a conflict if and when a case arose in which that organization was a party or participant?

Ed Rendell's wife is a federal judge. He is governor of Pensylvania. DOesn't bother me at all. Does it bother you?

Think about it ... why should ANY member of Congress spend an hour holding a town hall so that crazy right wingers can roll on the floor screaming like toddlers.

That time can not be much better spent talking to a lobbyist who will tell you how to vote, so his company will (a) run endless ads telling the people in your home state what a "great family values" candidate you are, while (b) running endless ads telling the people in your home state that your opponent has sex with farm animals.
