I Think Obama is Planning on Overturning DADT during the 2012 Election

Why else would he be ignoring General and men serving in the military and wasting SO MUCH time on studies and research? He can overturn DADT right now. Now today we hear he is more than likely not planning on doing anything this year? Has Obama lost the entire gay vote in 2012?

entirely because the polls show everyone is pissed...DADT needs to wait (assuming there is another battle with repubs waiting on this).
I want to overturn it too but i thikn it is suicide for him to not focus 100% on jobs after this healthcare thing.
And also the financial mess needs to be taken care of too which is related to the jobs thing.

A lotta, lotta LGBTQ people really get tired of "Maybe next time, Dearie." I am one of them. Jobs? Important, DAMNED important right now. But there is a hell of a lot more involved in running a government that just jobs (and before anyone goes there, I have no job right now, have not had for a few months now, and am becoming less a fan of ramen by the day).

6. I don't think so. Lieberman is on board, which is actually a good sign

considering what a POS he is. He is doing it for people like me, the people in his state that are Dems that think he used to be one of us. Too late to get his #'s out of the toilet but he could convince some conservadems in the Senate and it will pass. I think the House would be a bit easier. Gates is looking good about it. Some in the military will never be there, Obama cannot convince them. But he is not going to have a major confrontation with the military like Bill Clinton did. I think this is not a terrible approach. Get some in the military on your side, have them force Congress to act. But it is not going to happen until we pass HCR and Financial Reform.

Does Obama actually think gays and lesbians who voted for him in 2008 will vote for him again? He PROMISED on the campaign trail he would make DADT a priority. This is why I think he is waiting til closer to election time. IMO,he has totally betrayed the GLBT community and I fear his arrogance assumes we will all vote for him again in 2012 no matter what. So sad.

He has not been that strong on gay rights issues. I was simply saying what I think the strategy will be and how it might be done. He does not even believe in gay marriage. He was simply the only avenue that was left in 2008 to get anything remotely related to gay rights issues addressed. I am a realist about it so I won't defend him like he is a big hero on this issue. And like Vabrella said below I think they may stick it in the budget defense bill for this year.

direct a suspension of discharges under DADT. The legislation gives him that authority. Congress passed the DADT law. Congress must pass legislation to end DADT and also to change the UCMJ.

He's not a king or dictator.

Congress must pass legislation to overturn/repeal DADT. Then the President signs that repeal and it becomes official.
